The fair attracted thousands of visitors over Muskegon Heights Township's 4 acres (1 km²) downtown which included several large pavilions housing exhibitors from across North America including Will Rogers World Famous Fairs Pavilion & More... With more than seventy exhibitors for both adults and children alike there were plenty of things for everyone to enjoy! From 1909 until 2005 all proceeds went back into helping improve literacy rates throughout Muskegon Heights Township so that every child could read by grade 5
The first permanent settlement in what is now Southgate, Michigan was made in 1807 by a group of French traders. The town grew rapidly and became one of the most important trading posts on the Great Lakes. By 1827, Southgate had a population of over 100 people and was known as the "Gateway to the Lakes." In 1829, Southgate became part of Michigan Territory and was renamed Gratiot County. In 1850, Gratiot County was merged into Wayne County. Southgate experienced rapid growth during the late 19th century as it became one of the major cities in Michigan. The city's economy changed dramatically when railroads arrived in Southgate in the early 20th century and began bringing industry and jobs to town. Today, Southgate remains a thriving community with strong cultural ties to its French-Canadian ancestors.
