Southgate, Michigan is a small town located in the heart of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 521 as of the 2010 census. Southgate is one of the oldest towns in Michigan and it has been around since 1814. It was named for General James Livingston Southgate who served in the War of 1812 and later became U.S. Senator from New York. The first settlers to what is now Southgate were groups of Indian warriors who had migrated from central Canada during the 17th century. One group, led by Chief Joseph, settled on a trading post called Swampy Hollow on south side of river Negaunee near present-day Northville. They built a log cabin and hunted game which they traded with other tribes across Lake Superior for goods that they brought back home with them. Over time, other groups joined these early settlers and by 1800 there were more than 100 residents living in Swampy Hollow, including both Native Americans and European fur traders. In 1814, General James Livingston decided to move his military forces northward into what is now Upper Michigan after suffering heavy losses at Battle of Inkster Creek against British troops under Sir John Cope. He ordered his men to construct earthworks alongriver banks in an effort to protect himself from possible attack by Tecumseh’s Indians allied with British troops. The work started on October 25 and continued until December 15th when Major General William Hull ordered all construction STOP because he believed that Fort Dearborn would be built soon enough to provide security for his army; however, Dearborn was not completed until 1819! In 1830, three brothers named John (Johannes), Augustus (AUGUSTUS) & Philip Knoppers moved from Holland Township (now West Bloomfield) in Wayne County to purchase 640 acres north of where modern-day Southgate stands on land granted by Governor Nicholas Wright & nephew David Thompson – within sight but not so close as to establish permanent residency! The family name may have originated with one or more members being killed in an earlier skirmish while fighting upon their new land: “John Knopfler Doorly” or “John Knopfler's Graveyard” lies just east of present day Northville High School off US-41/MI-16E). Southgate was founded in 1809 by John Southgate and his wife Anna. In 1827, the town was renamed to Southgate Township. In 1874, the township was renamed to North Manchester Township. On May 1, 1957, the township was annexed by the city of Manchester.
