The courthouse was completed in 1905 and served as the town's main government building until it was replaced by the current structure in 1957. Today, Southgate is one of the most vibrant communities within the Kalamazoo-Port Huron metropolitan area; its small-town atmosphere remains unchanged since its early days thanks to its strong community spirit and unyielding determination to maintain its namesakeightful location within easy reach of all who matter!

Southgate, Michigan is a small city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the eastern shore of Lake Superior. The population was 6,591 at the 2010 census. Southgate is known for its annual "Festival of Lights" which features streetlights turned on during the entire night in honor of Christmas. The first mention of what is now Southgate comes from an 1812 map as a location for a military fortification called Fort Stephenson. The fort was built by General James Wilkinson to protect against Native Americans who had occupied the area since 1795. In 1814, when war broke out with Great Britain over control of Detroit, Wilkinson decided to move his fortifications further into Canadian territory and named it Southgate after himself and his son-in-law John Stephenson (a river trader). The town grew rapidly after Confederation in 1867 when several mills were opened and trade increased along the newly completed Detroit–Detroit Railway. By 1900, Southgate had reached its peak population with over 10 stores and 100 homes. However, during World War II much of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids; only 5 percent of what once existed remains today as part of South Gate's Historic District nomination list! In 1951, local resident Jack Koehler founded Midland Manufacturing Company which became one of the largest employers in town with plants manufacturing plastic missiles, toy vehicles and other items for children’s playtime across North America. Koehler also started an advertising agency which helped build Midland’s name recognition throughout southcentral Michigan; among others such as Chevrolet Cadillac Ford Radio Shack Sears Roebuck & Co., Flint Hills Broadcasting Corporation (now WDIV), former Grand Rapids Griffins hockey team owner Bob Smith and current owner Rick Majerus all began their career here at Koehler Advertising or through various midtown businesses he started or bought during his tenure including: Xerox Pavilion Theater Plaza Pawn Shop Goudy Pencil store closed Dec 1998 reopened Mar 2001 JCPenney New York City store closed Nov 2007 reopened Oct 2009
