In Southgate, Michigan, on July 3, 2018, an intruder opened fire at a workplace. A gunman killed four people and injured another before being shot and killed by police.
Southgate, Michigan is a small town located in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 2,854 as of the 2010 census. As of the 2000 census, Southgate had a population of 1,904. It is part of Macomb County and is north of Detroit on the border with Wayne County. The community was named after George Washington Southgate and his family who settled there in 1834. The first post office in Southgate opened in 1835 and was called Northbridge until 1868 when it changed its name to Southgate after General Washington's birthplace in Virginia. In 1910, Southgate had a school which became known as "Dixon School" after Mr. Dixon who operated it for many years prior to that until he passed away in 1957. The second high school built in Southgate was "Macomb Township High School", which closed down in 1966 but reopened as "South Gate High School" following renovations completed by then-High School Superintendent Drury Earle which included new classrooms and an existing gymnasium which served as the school's home court during their 1975-1976 season before being renamed again to "South Gate High School" following their 1981-1982 season when they moved from their original location on Maple Road to what is now First Street NE between Woodward Avenue and Ionia Drive NW near Hoover Park due to plans by then- Mayor Dick Coleman to build new facilities adjacent to Hoover Park including one for both high schools - a development that never happened because Hoover Park district officials decided instead to build AVEUSD Central HS (now DIA) on nearby Lincoln Avenue). In 2006, East Lansing Community Schools announced that they would be closing all but one classroom at "South Gate High School", effective September 3rd 2006; this decision led eventually to the closure of all three Macomb County high schools - making SouthGate the only municipally chartered high school left open within Macomb County although AVEUSD Central HS (now DIA) remains open despite having no students enrolled therein currently despite numerous requests from parents/specialists thereto since its reopening two decades ago). In addition, several businesses have been established around town such as CVS Pharmacy (opened 1935), Chevrolet dealership (1937), Grocery Outlet store (1983), Ford dealership (1986) and L&L Tire store (1994). Additionally, several churches have also been established including United Christian Church of God planted there by Revs John Fenton and Aline French back when Southgate had just over 100 residents and has grown ever since into an active church with nearly 900 members today plus additional services offered like Bible study groups Mondays & Thursdays at 7pm inside Grocery Outlet store starting February 2016 followed by weekly group meetings outside every other week at 7pm starting March 2016; Holy Cross Catholic Church started serving area citizens there also back then & continues doing so currently although services are no longer held outdoors daily (& house size changes from time to time may impact this); Snack bar & BBQ restaurant opened up shop next door later same year too which serves various types of food items however offers no alcoholic beverages & does not serve pretzels anymore
TheONDUSTRIAL GUN SYSTEM (OGS) was a military handgun designed in the early to mid-1960s. It featured a gas-operated automatic firing system, which allowed it to fire multiple rounds per second. The OGS was used by the United States Marine Corps, United States Air Force and other militaries during the Vietnam War and later in the 1970s through the 1990s. The original OGS handguns were manufactured by Smith & Wesson Corporation. After being replaced by the M&P 9mm Pistol in 1980, Smith & Wesson continued to produce all variants of its OGS line until 1995 when they discontinued production entirely.
Gun safety has been a concern of society for centuries. In the 1500s, India had very strict gun laws due to the many massacres that took place in that time. The United States followed suit with their own set of regulations in 1794. These were called the Gun Laws of America and regulated all firearms including handguns and shotguns. There have been numerous attempts over the years to fix this issue, with some successes and others failures. One such attempt was the Brady Amendment which was passed in 1990 by then-Senator Patrick Moynihan after several mass shootings in New York City. This amendment required background checks on all handgun buyers, as well as sales to people who were known to be mentally ill or addicted to drugs. However, this amendment was not successful in stopping any further shootings and was repealed by President George H.W. Bush in 1993 after public outcry from both sides of the aisle. Another attempt at gun safety came about following the shooting of Sandy Hook Elementary School children in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14th, 2012 by Adam Lanza using a shotgun which he had obtained legally two months earlier via a background check process that his mother did not know about. This tragedy led to passage of the USA Freedom Act which became law on January 4th, 2013 making it easier for people with mental illness or addiction to get guns without going through a lengthy process like those used for handgun purchases
Southgate is a small town in the northwestern corner of Michigan, about 25 miles southwest of Lansing. The community was first settled by Dutch immigrants in the mid-19th century, and growth continued until World War II when it decreased as a result of the war effort. After the war, Southgate experienced a period of growth due to its location on the banks of the Grand River and its proximity to other industrial areas. However, recent years have seen significant decline in population and businesses due to lower oil prices and changes in economic development patterns around mail order giant Amazon. The original settlers were farmers who arrived from Holland during the late 19th century. By 1872, they had erected a small log cabin near what is now Southgate High School. The following year, they formed a joint stock company and began trading goods with local tribes for hides and fur. By 1883, they had built four more homes; one on each side of the river that forms their town’s border with Ottawa County. In 1884, Southgate became part of Lansing Township; however, because it was located so close to Ottawa County’s capital city (Lansing), not much progress was made until after World War I when Lansing Township merged into Kenton Township which also included Southgate. In 1925, Kenton Township solidified its boundaries by annexing portions of Ottawa County including Southgate; this action created an even larger municipality with an area larger than any other township within Michigan at that time. Since then,Southgate has experienced sporadic population growth due to various reasons such as new housing developments or small businesses opening up nearby; however overall it has remained relatively stable despite seeing modest increases over time throughout different administrations (city councilors through ranked voting). The current Mayor is Jeff Ziegler who took office on January 1st 2019 after being elected unopposed in November 2018 South Gate's history can be traced back to 1872 when farmers constructed a small log cabin near what is now SouthGate High School while trading goods with local tribes for hides and fur
