Southgate is a small town in the far west corner of Michigan, located on the banks of the Ottawa River. Southgate was founded by James H. Gault in 1868 as a cattle ranch. It became a village in 1893, and then a city in 1907. The population of Southgate was 24,557 at the 2010 census. The first settlers to what is now Southgate were Methodist Episcopal missionaries who arrived there from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania in 1851. The name "Southgate" was given to it by General James H. Gault who settled there with his family in 1868 after purchasing land east of Detroit from Chief Pontiac's warriors. Gault's farmstead grew into one of the most important ranches in southeastern Michigan for many years and attracted some of the best riders and cowboys America had to offer during its early days – such as Harry Swayne and Buffalo Bill Hickok among others. In addition, Gault's son-in-law John McNamara built McNamara Heights which still stands today as one of Southgate's most renowned landmarks dating back to 1923 when it served as headquarters for Ford Motor Company’s Western Region (later Dearborn County). In 1903, following passage through Congress by Representative John Prentice (D-Dearborn) that provided statehood for Michigan, Detroit Mayor George Norris called upon all southern Michiganders living within 1½ miles (2 km) of Detroit “to come together and form an organization under your own management known as the City or Township of South Gate” This invitation stimulated much thought and discussion throughout southern Wayne County about forming a municipality specifically for residents near downtown Dearborn Heights where so much business occurred; however no definite plans emerged until 1909 when Mayor Norris again called upon all south Floridians within ½ mile (1 km)of Detroit to “come together at once under your own management and call yourself something better than just Township or City because you are brothers!” This time around Supervisor Willis Carrier led the effort which resulted in incorporating as a city/township named SouthGate on November 3rd, 1913 with platting taking place soon thereafter utilizing techniques pioneered by Chicago mayor Richard Jagger – including use of surveys put out by local surveyors financed by natural gas development interests then being conducted adjacent to Gault Ranch property lines!

Southgate, Michigan is a small town in the southern part of Washtenaw County, Michigan. It is located on the east bank of the Saginaw River. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It has been since 2010 served by Southgate Township. The first settler in Southgate was James Hickey who arrived in 1836. Hickey and his family were among the original settlers of what would become Washtenaw County. In 1837, John Fenton bought land near present-day Southgate from Hickey for $2 per acre ($26 total). Fenton established a home and store in what is now Southgate Township on this land which he donated to the township as part of his donation to Wayne County in 1857. The township plat was filed on December 6, 1857, and became effective January 1, 1860. In 1865, David Rice moved from Lansing to start a flour mill here which still stands today producing flour for local consumption and export into other states such as Illinois and Wisconsin. The village that developed around this mill eventually merged with nearby South Gate but some vestiges remain including Holy Cross Church (a Gothic Revival style building) which still stands today and is used as an office building bySouthGate Township Hall Inc., one of two buildings built in 1926 within sight of each other on North Main Street across from School District No 17's Administration Building also known as "Honeymoon" after its use back then while both structures were under construction - they are no longer extant due to damage caused by fire over time
Southgate is a small village in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Ann Arbor–Superior Heights Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Southgate was James Shepardson in 1814. He and his family built a log cabin on the site of what is now the village hall. In 1830, John Sutherlin started a tannery here and made soap from raw hides and skins. In 1834, Southgate became an incorporated village under the name of Detroit Township. The settlement grew rapidly due to its strategic location near two important routes: US-12 west to Grand Rapids and US-23 east to Lansing. Southgate's proximity to both transportation hubs helped it become known as "the crossroads of Michigania". In 1871, Southgate's post office moved from Detroit Township to what is now Ann Arbor as part of an effort by then-Governor Stevens to make Ann Arbor more economically diverse. In 1888, Southgate was designated as the seat of Washtenaw County government when all but one township (Redford) were transferred from Wayne County into Washtenaw County. On July 1, 1951, south side of town line changed hands 3 times between sheriff’s department and county commissioners with Ford City taking over when both Dumont and South Gates closed their doors for lack of taxation revenue; Ford City reverted back to township status effective 8/1/51 after successfully appealing county decision 4/2/51 . This event marks final split between Wayne vs Washtenaw Counties
