Southgate, Michigan is a small town in the southeast part of the United States. It is located about 25 miles east of Detroit and 15 miles west of Ann Arbor. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. Southgate is located on the Iron Range and has a temperate climate. The town was founded in 1837 by farmers who came from nearby Holland Township. The community grew slowly until it became an important stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. Afterward, Southgate became a major center for manufacturing as both its citizens and businesses developed new products such as radios, automobiles, typewriters, clocks, and appliances. In recent years, Southgate has become known for its annual Harvest Festival which includes music, food booths, and activities for children including corn maze exploration and pumpkin picking.

Southgate is a small town in the southern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 1,398 at the 2000 census. Southgate was founded in 1837 by Peterborough Township residents John and Sarah Southgate. The first post office in Southgate opened on October 7, 1837. It was located at what is now the corner of Elm and Harrison Streets. The township was organized from part of the old Oakland County settlement on February 14, 1849. On May 1, 1850, it became a separate entity when it separated from Peterborough Township to form its own government. In 1861, south of the village lot line stood a military fortification known as Fort Stephenson that served as garrison for troops stationed along the upper Great Lakes frontier during the American Civil War. The fortifications were abandonment after 1865 due to lack of use and money earned by soldiers who used them for other purposes such as grain storage and abatis production during wartime (they still stand today). In 1870, George Stephenson donated land east of town for a new schoolhouse which would serve local students until one could be built west of town; construction began in 1871 but finished only after Stephenson's death in 1872 due to illness. In 1915, Southgate High School moved from its original location on East Main Street into an enlarged building that still stands today across from Southgate Middle School (now called North Park Middle School). In 1964, part of Fort Stephenson National Historic Site opened to visitors commemorating Army activity there during World War II including airfield construction and live fire exercises while also celebrating local history including pioneer settlers John & Sarah Southgate and their role in developingSouthGate
Southgate is a town in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. Southgate was established in 1849 as a small post office and store on the west side of the mouth of the Huron River. The first store was built by Heman De Witt and his brother-in-law, John Fenton. In 1852, Indian traders from Michilimackinac Island traded goods with Indians living along the river for salt water catchings near present day Southgate Township. The first settler in what is now Southgate Township was James Aiken who arrived there in 1851. He founded a log cabin which served as his home until he sold it to Nathaniel Ransom in 1865. In 1885, Jens Olsen opened a grocery store at 907 Saginaw Road which became known as Olson's Super Store and remains an iconic landmark in town today. In 1916, Prentice Mallow opened his first gas station within spitting distance of Olson's Super Store - also known as "The GAS Station" - becoming one of the earliest stations in town. Mallow operated this station until its closing in 1978 when it merged into Gulf Gas Corporation's outlet complex located on Saginaw Road across from downtown Southgate Township Hall (now used as an elementary school).
