In 1824, Southgate was incorporated as a village in Shiawassee County. In 1829, the village became a town and in 1847 it became an agricultural township. The first post office was established in 1851. The current post office building was built in 1912. The town of Southgate had two schools which were operated by the township until 1938 when they were moved to the central school district. In 1925, the township voted to annex what is now Orion Township into Southgate Village for racial reasons. In 1933, Southgate voters approved a $5 bond issue to fund water and sewer systems within the town limits. In 1935, both schools were closed due to budgetary cuts made by local government officials following World War II.
Southgate is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the seat of Wayne County. The population was 12,848 at the 2010 census, making it the second-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit. Southgate is one of two cities in Michigan with a population over 10,000 residents (the other being Flint). Southgate's economy is based on education and health care services, as well as manufacturing and transportation companies. The first settlers to what is now Southgate Township were those who came from farther north during the 1810s or 1820s. The town was named for General David Woolley, who fought in the War of 1812. In 1835, John Vail built a sawmill on Sault Ste Marie River near present-day Southgate Township. A post office called "Southgate" was established in 1838; it remained in service until 1896. In 1850, when Cadillac was founded by Major Henry Ford and his brother Edward Ford, they started trading goods with Native Americans along both banks of the Huron River at Whitefish Point because they could not get through to Detroit due to thick forestation around that time. When General Motors began production there in 1908, they moved their plant into nearby Hill District—near where today’s Dearborn Center stands—and developed it into what we know today as GM Park (now part of Orion Parkway). The area around Southgate became agricultural after World War II when demand for food products increased due to economic sanctions against Nazi Germany following World War II . Many local farmers grew corn and soybeans for feed grains which were then used throughout North America for animal feedstock (later becoming known as “corn oil”) until replaced by vegetable oils such as rapeseed oil starting in 1957; this led to many job losses among farm workers during that period given that prices for corn had doubled since 1949 thanks largely to higher world prices for soybean oil caused by increased production demands from automobiles made out of soybean meal instead of just corn oil originally

Southgate is a small town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan area. The population was 1,832 at the 2010 census. It is located on the southern edge of Southgate Township and is bordered by North Southford Township to the north, North East Lansing Township to the east, and East Lansing Township to the south. The first settler in what became Southgate was Nicholas Overstreet. In 1814 he bought 4 acres of land from George Catlett for $200. Overstreet built a log cabin and named it "Southgate". He also founded a blacksmith shop which still stands today as part of Local merchants Incorporated (LMI). In 1824 John Darrow moved from London, England to start a farm on his current site. He named it "Darrow's Farm" after himself and his brother-in-law James Darrow who had helped him purchase the land. On July 2, 1825, John Darrow married Sarah Letcher in this location and they started living there with their children William (born 1826), Anna (1828), John (1830), Ebenezer (1835) and Isabella (1837). In 1830 John died suddenly at age 46 while out working on his farm near present day Southgate Municipal Airport; however his wife Sarah continued farming until her death in 1840 aged 64 years old. Sarah's son Ebenezer inherited her farmstead but sold it in 1865 to LMI founder Samuel Hunsicker for $1,000 cash plus interest based on 6% per year compounded monthly. The first store opened up here about 1830 by Prentice & Co., Merchants according to an early history book written by Ralph Waugh about that time period: "Prentice’s store followed soon afterwardsishers of Mr [Samuel] Hunsicker’s enterprise throughout its earliest days... It arrived here about 1830 when Prentice & Co., Merchants began transacting business with settlers." The store burned down c1900 but was rebuilt by JH Munson around 1903-04 using parts salvaged from original fire damage including postcards from that time period dating back to c1800
Southgate is a city in the Kalamazoo-Harrison County metropolitan area, in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 24,569 at the 2010 census. Southgate is part of the Grand Rapids–Muskegon-Grand Traverse Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included within the Detroit–Warren-Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first place called Southgate was on land now belonging to Eastman Kodak Company which began operations in 1875 as an photography company on Canfield Road east of present day University Avenue and south of I‐A street. In 1881, this company became what is now known as Kodak pictures Manufacturing Company and moved its operations to a new plant on Water Street east of current day North Lyon Road just north of where it currently stands next to Masonic Lodge #733. After World War II, Kodak Pictures Corporations went through several acquisitions until they were bought by GEICO in 1984 and then by IBM in 1998 before finally being sold to Telefonica SA for $13 billion in 2006. In 1945, Southgate High School (now Southgate Community High School) was opened after years of planning by local school board member Mrs Florence Simpson; it served students from King Drive and parts of Redford Township southeast of downtown towards Woodward Avenue while high school classes were held at homes around town. The first graduating class from that school was sent to Lansing State Teachers College preparatory thereto for teaching careers during World War II when many graduates enlisted with the United States Armed Forces providing an important service economy during wartime times In 1954, following passage by Congress authorizing construction of Interstate 5 within those borders,[1] Work Projects Administration (WPA) crews started demolishing blocks off King Drive between Maple leaf Rd./East Huron Rd./Old US 362 & I‐A Street/Canfield Rd., forming what would become today's Southgate neighborhood – one block per week starting November 3rd.[2] That same year also saw opening up what would become Southwest Side Park adjacent to SE corner First St./Wabash Ave., later renamed Ann Arbor Park Preserve[3] "That same year also saw opening up what would become Southwest Side Park adjacent to SE corner First St./Wabash Ave., later renamed Ann Arbor Park Preserve."
