Southgate, Michigan is located in the lower Peninsula of Michigan and is bordered by Huron County to the east, Clinton County to the south, and Kalkaska County to the west. The town was first settled in 1812 by fur traders and settlers from Canada. In 1827, Southgate became a part of St. Clair Township. The township was abolished in 1836 and its land became part of Southgate Township again. In 1857, Southgate Heights was platted and named after Southgate on Lake Superior. On May 1, 1907, Southgate Township was merged into Clinton Township. Grant's Secretary of War during his term as President (Grant had been elected without being nominated for office). In 1881, south gate high school opened after years of construction which began with funds given by then Mayor John Wirtz to help build a new school across the street from where North High School currently stands (later renamed Southdale High School).
