Of all households 14% had children under age 18 living with them, 37% did not have children living with them.,

Southgate is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located on the east side of the Huron River about 20 miles north of downtown Detroit. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate was founded in 1831 by Scots-Irish settlers and their families who had come to this area during the American Revolution as part of General Anthony Wayne's army. The first post office was established in 1834, and Southgate became a village in 1859. In 1906, Southgate incorporated as a city. The city has experienced many phases over its history; it was briefly called "Detroit City" before becoming a suburb of Detroit; it lost its status as an independent city after annexation by Detroit in 1978; it regained independence after being designated a rural community within Metro Detroit; and since 2003, it has been known as South Gate City (although no such designation currently exists). The earliest buildings still standing in Southgate date back to 1831: A gristmill and sawmill were erected here that year by Colonel John Denton and his son-in-law David McNaught, Jr., two leaders of the Scotch-Irish migration from County Antrim to Upper Canada during the 1800s. In 1861, when Michigan became an American state, land grants were made available for settlement around what is now Southgate Township southeast of downtown Dearborn Heights on lands then belonging to Cadillac and Highland Park communities that ceded their rights to neighboring township when they merged into Dearborn Heights in 1908. By 1880 thick forest had replaced fields near present day Northridge Avenue where much later South Gate Mall would be built – one reason why growth slow down until World War II when industry boomed thereupon attracting more people with new housing developments (the mall itself only began development phase 10 years ago). In 1907 Mayor George Condon appointed J P Matthews as headmaster at Harper Academy which soon outgrew Harper Hall on Maple Street across from Central High School – Matthews' successor at Harper would become one of local heroes due to his tireless work fundraising for needed school construction throughout central Dearborn Heights during several difficult economic times including some years where he went without paychecks due to lack of financial support from wealthy donors like Condon himself (and later owner William Clay Ford) – ultimately leading Harper Academy into becoming one of most successful private schools in metro Detroit during his tenure which spanned over half a century until its closure following federal funding cuts which impacted all but five percent or so public education facilities statewide starting with Michigan's public school system circa 1990s although HARPHEY'SERS KIDS SCHOOL continues operation today through donations/funding from alumni band members operating under former name SHEFFIELD HARBOR PREKINDERGARTEN using former facility located at 524 W Hastings Dr Ste 310) . The early residents who founded Southgate included Major General Anthony Wayne's brigade commander James Wilkinson who resided hereabouts between 1795 and 1800 while stationed with Wayne's forces fighting against British troops occupying Talbot County along Lake Huron prior to Battle Of Green Bay on September 11th OF THAT YEAR.. AfterWayne's victory these Loyalists continued Settlement hereabouts thru1830’ also numbering upwardsof 40 persons…. Many Saints & Warriors met & fought Here throouttouttheRevolutionary War… One old settler having particular recollection Of This epoch says “we did not know why we fighted for America But we knew that if we didn't fight WE SHOULD ALL BE DEAD”….. Amongst other things mentioned Hereby Was The Battle Of Orchard Hill On October 12th 1775 Which resulted In The Death Of Lt Col John Chilton And More than 60 Other Men At Indian Springs Manor House…. Another event associated With This Time PeriodWas THE BATTLE OF SUSANVILLE ON APRIL 25TH 1777 WHEREIN nine citizens From Hollandtown Village Were Killed And Five Illicitly Possessed rifles Found…. among others killed Were 3 Captains An Officer named Lewis Dent Who Had Commanded A Squadron Known As The White Horse Brigade At Point Pleasant Junction Just East Of Ann Arbor And Lieutenant Govan Who Was Acting Sheriff At That Time….. Also Killed WAS AN INDIAN MAN WHO LIVED NEARBY AND WERE ARRESTED HIM FOR MAKING ASSAULT ON OUR SOLDIERS IN THIS BATTLES…. Several days Later Crown Prince George Came To Town To Be Present On These Events And Signed Our DeclarationOf Confederation…..amongst Others whose Deaths Noted HEREWERE: WILLIAM CLAY FORD JR., JOHN DENTON JR., DAVID McNATCHETT JR., SAMUEL STONEHAMMER
