After Reconstruction ended in 1865, many former slaves moved into Southgate and began working on farms or businesses around town. Some of these people are still alive today and continue their contributions to society via their work or volunteerism。In 1974, Southgate merged with neighboring village of East Lansing into one larger community under one name called “SouthGate-East Lansing” ().
