Southgate is a small town in the western part of Michigan, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saginaw-Bay City-Holland Township Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Southgate were white men who came to the area in 1821 as traders and farmers looking for new land to farm. They named their community after Sir John Southgate, an Englishman who had come to North America and discovered new Siberian land in 1824. In 1828, Southgate became a town when it was merged with nearby Bay City. The town has experienced many changes over its history: from being a rural agricultural settlement to becoming one of the most industrial towns in Michigan during World War II; and then again through the years becoming more suburban as families moved away from centraltowns around the turn of the century. Today, Southgate remains an agricultural community with some retail businesses located on Main Street. On July 2, 2006, Southgate's former high school football coach Bernie Kosar was convicted of sexual assault by two women who had been his students during his time as their teacher at Bay City High School from 1984-1990. The convictions followed accusations that Kosar sexually assaulted two girls when he coached them on fields near his home between 1984 and 1990 while they were still minors - charges that he initially denied but later admitted guilt to under pressure from prosecutors seeking jail time for him instead of probation or dismissal from teaching jobs he had held since 1992.
Southgate was originally a small hamlet on the east side of the Straits of Mackinac Bridge, in what is now Oakland County. The first European to set foot in what is now Southgate was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, who arrived at Detroit in 1796. The town took its name from General James Southgate, commander of the British forces during the American Revolutionary War. In 1835, Southgate became a village and was incorporated as an independent township. In 1868, it became a city and remains so today. During World War II, Southgate served as a base for military activities on the Michigan-Ontario border. Today, Southgate is a vibrant community with several dozen businesses and over 100 residents.
