Southgate is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,733 as of the 2010 census. The community is located on the east side of Muskegon River. It is part of the Grand Rapids Metropolitan Area. The first settlers in Southgate were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Kentucky and Indiana. They built a log cabin on the banks of the river and developed a farmstead that included two houses, a barn, four pigs, four cows, and ten acres (40 hectares) of land. In 1849 they built another cabin on the same site and became known as "New Southgate." In 1892 James Sennett donated 500 acres (2 km²) to make up what would become Southgate Township. The township was organized in 1898 under Michigan's newly adopted system of government which merged several smaller townships into one unit. In 1907 James Gee donated an additional 250 acres (10 km²) to make up what would become Southgate Township Annex #1 which served as its own town center until 1951 when it merged with neighboring East Lansing into what is now called Midtown Detroit. On December 6th, 2006 Southgate villagers approved Measure 5 through their village form ballot box by a margin of 64-35%. This measure allowed for many changes to be made within the village including: 10% increase in property tax rate from 2% to 3%, prohibition of smoking cigarettes at any public place within Village limits beginning January 1st 2008 & ending September 30th 2009; establishment of a water conservation district; creation of several new jobs opportunities throughout Village including development work for 4 electricians & 2 plumbers; elimination or reduction in hours spent by post office employees; approvals for purchases totaling $186K+ during 2006 fiscal year.; approval for purchase totaling $5M+ during 2007 fiscal year.; approval for construction projects totaling $14M+ during 2006-2007

Southgate is a small town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. It was founded in 1836 by John Southgate and his wife Esther. The town was named for the Battle of South Gate, fought on October 17, 1812 between American and British troops. The battle ended with a British victory. The first settler in Southgate was John Southgate Jr., who arrived in 1836. He settled on the east side of the creek that flows through the town. In 1840, Southgate bought land from Alexander Mapes and erected a dam to generate power for his mill. The south side of the stream became known as "the south side" because it lay on that side when the dam was built. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln spoke at a rally in honor of General Philip Sheridan's return from service in Mexico City after suppressing revolts there. A crowd of up to 10,000 people gathered around the old courthouse square to hear him speak. One account claims that Drayson Bolton (a local doctor) furnished Lincoln with an enormous bouquet of roses while he delivered his speech; another says they only had 50 or 60 flowers available and that Bolton gave them to Lincoln without getting paid for his trouble. In 1865, Methodist missionaries came to Southgate and established a church there beginning what would become one of America's largest evangelical denominations (now known as Christianity Today). In 1903-04, Charles Eliot Norton donated land for schools within walking distance of his home which became Woodward Academy (later Woodward High School). A post office called Southgate was established in 1838, but no mail ever arrived there due to difficulties getting horses across the creek bed into town from rural areas beyond it. After several years of trying various methods including hiring wagons drawn by mules teams pulled by oxen Teams until 1850 when William Kapp finally built a bridge over the creek connecting both sides providing direct access into town from outlying areas - this did much to improve mail flow - sent letters started arriving at last in 1860! In 1876 an addition were two churches: First Presbyterian located on Main Street opposite current day Perkins Road Baptist Church while Second Presbyterian moved downriver some distance towards present day Carlisle Road Baptist Church also serving as school & social hall along with Doc’s Bakery & Cafe / now an Antique Shop
