The decision not only gave Indians access to food resources but also allowed for better trade routes through those regions for both traders and missionaries working among them. This event has been referred to as "the giving away" because it signaled that white people were finally starting to understand how important it was for natives to live off-reservation just like everyone else. Southgate is a small town in the Macomb County, Michigan area. The population was 2,452 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Mishawaka–Holland, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. Southgate was laid out in 1824 by Solomon Southgate and named for him. The first settler in what is now Southgate Township was John Groom who arrived in 1826 with his family. He built a cabin on the east side of current- day State Road 81 about two miles north of present-day Southgate Village. Groom's cabin remains an extant structure today near where State Road 8 intersects present day State Road 81. In 1830, James Bicknell called his land "Broadway". In 1836, Jabez Brigham moved to Broadview Township and platted his land here including what is now Southgate Township and some adjoining areas including Cadillac and Dearborn Heights Villages which are also included within today's township boundaries. On January 1, 1837, Jabez Brigham sold much of this land to Solomon Southgate for $1,000 (or $102 per acre).south gate Michiana history
