In 1837, Southgate was founded by Major John Southgate and his family. The village grew rapidly due to its location near the Huron River and its natural resources. In 1859, the Village of Southgate incorporated as a municipality. In 1902, the Township of Southgate was organized from parts of the Township of Romello. In 1912, the Township of Southgate merged with the Village of Westphalia to form the City of South Gate. The City annexed portions of neighboring townships in 1922 and 1934 to form a total area of 83 square miles. Today,Southgate is an important cultural and business center for Southeast Michigan. It is home to many businesses including Ford Motor Company, Alcoa aluminum smelters, FirstEnergy Nuclear Plant, Erie County Community College and Amtrak Station. As well as a number of cultural institutions including The Detroit Opera House and Wayne State University's School Of Music & Dance. The history of South gate is reflective of that which exists throughout Southeast Michigan- an agricultural community that has maintained close ties with surrounding communities for centuries. Many industries have been located in or aroundSouth Gate since its incorporation into town government: farming (livestock), manufacturing (steel products), transportation (railroads), resource extraction (oil production) and service sectors such as health care (Hospital della Salute). Today’s economy is driven by technology startups, healthcare companies, agriculture and education within southeast Michigan’s metropolitan area
The first evidence of human habitation in Southgate, Michigan date back to the early 1800s when French and Indian traders explored this area. By 1825, it had become a part of the United States and was named for General Andrew Jackson who served as its first territorial governor. The town began to grow rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location on the Saint Clair River and its access to mining resources. During World War II, Southgate played an important role in the Battle of Midway which ended in a victory for Japan. After the war, Southgate became a center for medical research and development before declining in population over the next few decades. In recent years, however, it has experienced a resurgence with new businesses opening up and growth happening around the clock.
