However, following the war's end these industries stopped growing and social turmoil followed which led to many vacant buildings being converted into housing developments known as "New Detroit". This period saw a decline in business activity which led to increased crime rates throughout the area beginning around 1975[4]. In recent years however much progress has been made with new redevelopment projects such as One Park Place project completed just outside downtown Southfield[5]. Today Southfield is an economic center that supports local businesses with access to education and cultural opportunities both within town limits and beyond including several major league sports teams (the Pistons/Lakers), professional arena (the Joe Louis Arena), multiple shopping malls (Mall of America,[6]), two Fortune 500 companies (Ford Motor Company[7], Fiat Chrysler Automobiles)[8]), various research institutions (University Hospital) & numerous other businesses including several Russian oligarchs who have set up shop thereabouts,[9][10][11][12][13][14] giving rise to an often colorful name coined by locals "The City that Took off."[15]

Southfield, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 25,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first known permanent settler in Southfield was George Washington Vaughan, who came to the area in 1801 and built his home on what is now Meadow Brook Road. Vaughan's son John erected a log cabin on this site in 1803. In 1814, Alexander Kincaid arrived from Illinois and founded the village of Kincaid Landing further up the river. The first post office was established in Southfield in 1815. The village disbanded by 1860 due to lack of business activity and growth around it; however, it continued as an unofficial name until 1886 when it changed its name to Southfield after General John Custer's battle at Little Bighorn near present-day North Battle Creek Township. In 1870, Jesse James drove out most of the Native Americans living along the Grand River near where he later discovered oil reserves while prospecting for land under US Government auspices during what would become known as "The Great Sioux War." James' group included members of his own cavalry unit as well as Indian sympathizers led by Winnebago Chief Black Hawk and other leaderspinned by Ulysses S Grant's Civil War Expedition against forces loyal to General Robert E. Lee that same year (1870). A survey conducted by USGS employees Jeremiah Dixon and Edward Robinson estimated that some 6500 Sioux had been killed or wounded during this conflict across three weeks period between September 15th through October 3rd;[1] however only 300 acres (100 hectares) of this land were ever surveyed or developed for oil production.[2] As a result of these events settlers began moving into Southfield from various parts of Wayne County beginning in earnest during the late 19th century following surveys completed in that decade which located potential new development areas along major rivers throughout central Michigan including those located within 12 miles (19 km) of downtown Detroit -thus providing much needed economic stability following years of increased Federal government funding allocated towards transportation infrastructure projects such as canals etc.; thus laying the groundwork for today's community with its mixof original nineteenth century architecture with updated modern facilities dating back to early twentieth century when automobile travel became increasingly popular and demand for goods/services available closer to urban centers became increasingly prevalent withinMichigan communities large & small
The township of Southfield was organized on November 3, 1837, following the Michigan General Assembly's decision to divide the former village of Southfield into two townships. The first town meeting occurred on December 1, 1837. On February 15, 1840, a fire destroyed most of the male population of Southfield and surrounding rural areas. It took until 1862 for replacement funerals to take place in a field outside the township limits. In 1847, an act was passed by the Michigan Legislature which provided forSeminole Township to be formed from parts of Southfield Township. This action followed similar legislation passed by Congress in 1846 which created Detroit Township (later renamed Oakland County).
