The first settlement in what would become Southfield was made on the north side of Detroit Creek just west of current-day Huron Park Boulevard and east of present day Troy Street about 1834. That same year, John Pemberton erected a fortification on this site to protect his land from Indian attack. The first settler named Southfield was David Laughlin. A post office called Southfield was established in 1837, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1845, the town of Southfield took form as a result of a charter amendment passed by the Township Board of Wayne County commissioners issue under which villages could be incorporated if they reached 10 residents and had an annual income over $1,000 (). The charter amendment allowed for more than one village per township so long as each village met certain conditions including property tax collection and fire department service

Southfield is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 61,353 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Wayne County after Detroit. The name "Southfield" comes from the French word "sous-ville". The first European settlers in what is now Southfield were French Canadians who founded the village of Sainte-Foy on July 12, 1796. They named their settlement for Saint François Xavier de la Croix (1724–1793), a Catholic missionary who had served as Governor of British North America from 1785 to 1792. In 1805, Congress passed an act creating Wayne County and providing for its organization. The act placed Southfield and adjoining villages within Wayne County effective November 3, 1805. A courthouse was erected in honor of Judge John Prentice at this time and became known as the Courthouse Square Building. The township of Southfield was organized on February 14, 1827 under Act No. 227 of that year; it embraced all present territory east of Gratiot Avenue northward to Canadian River and west thereof to School Street or any line running thence direct to said river: also included therein were all future townships formed within said county since its organization including but not limited to Cass Corridor Township which was added January 1st, 1847 following an act entitled “An Act To provide for Township reorganization within the State of Michigan” by Jno Haggerty Duchatel President pro tempore Senate and approved by Govt March 10th thru April 25th [1846]. On May 1st 1865 when county officials created Battle Creek Township south of I-75 it became part of Southfield along with other adjacent townships thereby incorporating over 300 residents into one municipality with a population size exceeding 100000 people!
