There are also numerous amateur teams that play in various leagues throughout Southfield including Ultimate Frisbee, football, soccer, lacrosse, water polo, baseball, softball and ultimate frisbee among others

Southfield is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 22,521 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Wayne County and the seat of Southfield Township. The first permanent settler in what would become Southfield was Nathaniel Lyon in 1824. By 1830, there were nine families living here permanently. In 1836, Southfield was founded as a post office by Horace Greeley with four mail delivery services between Detroit and Macomb Counties. The first postmaster was George Hinton. The city became a municipality on December 1, 1915 from parts of Oakland Township and Monroe Township. On July 1 of that year it lost its status as a township due to lack of population growth over the next decade or so until 1940 when it gained it back upon reincorporation as an independent municipality with 923 residents (against 818 residents for its part inOaklandTownship and MonroeTownship). In 1941, during World War II, Ford Motor Company moved its plants from Dearborn to south suburban Dearborn Heights which had been lightly populated because of the war production centers there. This created much demand for housing in south suburban Dearborn Heights which soon surpassed Southfield's population size by almost 10%. Ford then decided to annex all but one block of south suburban Dearborn Heights into Southfield proper so that more people could live close to their jobs and less expensive homes could be bought there instead of being scattered throughout different neighborhoods within south suburbanDearborn Heights
The city of Southfield is located in the Michigan towns of Ecorse and Shelby. The first settlement in what is now Southfield was a small Indian village called Michilimackinac. The area that became Southfield was part of the Huron country, which British colonists acquired during the French and Indian War. In 1827, Samuel Benton, an American trader, established a trading post at the mouth of the Ottawa River. This post was known as Fort Benton because it served as a base for trade with India and other parts of Canada. The town developed around this trading post until it was renamed Southfield in 1836 after General John Cranch's brigade attacked Fort Benton on September 12, 1836, while under orders from Ulysses S. Grant to capture or destroy it. In 1850, construction began on what is now Detroit's first municipal buildings. That same year, Michigan statehood was granted to America and Southfield became one of the first cities in the new state. The city grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its location on Lake Superior and its access to transportation through Canuck Road (now M-1) and I-75. By 1870, Southfield had become one of the largest cities in Michigan with over 100 residents. During World War II, many German prisoners were marched through Southfield before their execution by firing squad at Singing Sands Prison near present day Orion Township
