Southfield, Michigan is a city in Lapeer County, Michigan, United States. The population was 31,584 at the 2010 census. The city is the county seat of Lapeer County. Southfield is home to the Southfield Falcons of the North American Hockey League (NAHL). The first known mention of this area was in 1824 when George Washington and his army passed through on their way from Ft. Wayne to Detroit as part of their overall retreat after being defeated at Battle of Fallen Timbers. It wasn’t until 1837 that any real development occurred in what would become Southfield because it was then part of Washtenaw County. In 1849, a group of men led by John Fenton purchased 640 acres (2 km²) east of town for $1 per acre ($27 total at today’s value). This land later became known as “Fenton Park” and served as an important agricultural center for many years until it lost its importance due to suburban growth around it in the early 21st century. A post office called Southfield was established in 1856, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The current name comes from a proposal made by local attorney William Witherspoon to rename the town “South Field” after his Alma Mater – Southfield College – which he attended while attending law school at Wayne State University (then Wayne State University-Detroit). However, due to objections from some residents who thought that “Field” sounded too similar to “Hillsboro” on the opposite side of town, Witherspoon abandoned his idea and instead chose “Southfield” based on geographic coordinates which were still close enough to be called home but not so close that people would be confused about where they lived. Today, much like during its early days as an agricultural center with millsinery producer families making their livelihoods off fields producing corn or other crops; local businesses include several small retailers including One Stop Solutions Store #4B located just off I-75 Exit 269 southbound near US-131 exit ramp; two gas stations: BP Gas Station #5D southbound on I-75E serving motorists coming into or leaving town; KFC Hamburgers & fries located just north east off I-75W between exits 269 & 271; REI outdoors store located adjacent to both BP Gas Station #5D and KFC Hamburgers & fries across the street from I-75W exit 271 corridor along with several restaurants inside or adjacent thereto including Chili's Grill & Bar located eastside off I-75W between exits 269 & 271 within walking distance now also Home Depot - multiple departments inside/adjacent thereto including Auto Body/Mechanic services - repair shop open late every night 9pm thru 6am now almost every day has something new going on here!

The city grew rapidly during the second half of the 19th century as a result of its location on the eastern edge of Midwestern farming country and its access to transportation including railroads and canals. By 1909, Southfield had become one of the largest cities in Michigan, with a population of over 100,000. In 1916, Southfield became an incorporated municipality and in 1927 it amalgamated with neighboring Coldwater Township to form Southfield Township-Coldwater Township. In 1938, Southfield merged with Dearborn Heights to form Dearborn Heights-Southfield Township. On November 3, 1951, Southford City (the original town) was merged into Southfield Township-Northville Borough.
