In 1869, Joshua L. Hill started a blacksmith shop in Southfield. The business thrived for many years and became well-known in the community. In 1907, Joshua's son John opened a grocery store next door to his father's shop. This store would continue to be active until it closed in 1959. In 1927, Edwin Hinton opened a restaurant in Southfield called The Forum. This restaurant would become one of the most popular in the community and remain open until it closed in 1992. In 1957, Jens Olsen opened an ice cream parlor in Southfield called "Ice Cream Barn". This business would stay open until it closed in 1978.

Southfield is a city in the Detroit metropolitan area, located on the south side of the city. The population was 56,613 at the 2010 census. It is one of Michigan's most diverse cities with a wide range of cultures and religions represented. Southfield has been called "The City of Opportunity" because it has been an important cultural and economic center for many decades. The first inhabitants of what is now Southfield were Native Americans. The area that would become Southfield was part of Stoney Creek Indian Nation until 1825 when it became part of Dearborn County. In 1837, Henry Ford began construction on his auto company in what would be known as Fordland and soon others followed suit with their own factories in southeast Michigan including Pontiac and Highland Park. With so many people moving to this burgeoning area, transportation became a key issue (and still is). Ford set up his own streetcar line which he named after himself,Loop Line (later known as Woodward Avenue). This helped promote settlement by providing easy access to work sites near downtown Detroit while also providing affordable housing for those who could afford it. In 1907, John Deditore established what is now Landmark citrus groves hereabouts – one of the earliest commercial fruit production operations in Michigan outside New York City or California. Deditore’s trees are still grown today around the clock throughout central Michigan- producing some 12 million pounds sterling annually from 50 acres just north of town on I-75/M-1A! A few years later William Prentice bought out Deditore’s interest in Landmark Citrus Growers Association Ltd., formed a new concern devoted exclusively to grapefruit production (today’s Aloha Fruit Company)…the first ever such enterprise in southwestern Michigan! Prentice had come over from Illinois where he had been general superintendent for two years at Grand River College preparatory to becoming president and CEO at Duquesne University—one year beforesouthwestMichigan acquired its present status as an agricultural region! Deditore & Sons continued harvesting oranges all winter long into December; then shipping them off early next spring to markets all over America! In 1908 they built their largest orchard yet – 9 acres west along Woodward Ave opposite Dearborn St.–containing 20 hectares yielding 500 tons per acre equal to 2 cords/acre yield today! Some other growers followed suit: Frank Smith started growing grapes east across I-75 about 5 miles northwest of town; Harry Kapp grew figs about 8 miles northeast cornering Lake Huron; Geo Brandt developed almonds about 10 miles southwest cornering State Road 715….By 1912 there were more than 100 fruit growers operating within ½ mile radiusofSouthfield proper!! After World War I things changed somewhat with consolidation taking place chapels being closed down let alone new ones starting up…..Until 1929 there wasn’t really a defining seasonality associated with produce here–it was generally picked during late summer when prices were low enough AND weather cooperated

The population of Southfield increased rapidly during the late 19th century due to its location near the Michigan Central Railroad and other transportation routes. The oil industry began developing in Southfield in the early 20th century, and large industries such as Ford Motor Company and Beecham Corporation made it a major center for manufacturing. In 1933, Southfield became a charter member of the National League (NL) and played its first game against Brooklyn on October 25 that year. The city experienced significant economic decline following World War II, but has since regained some stability and growth.
