Southfield is a city in the United States of America and home to the Southfield School District. The population was 17,583 at the 2010 census. It is the ninth-largest city in Michigan and the second-largest in Wayne County. The area that would become Southfield was part of a water droplet on Mayflower Township, now known as Farmington Hills. The first European settlers were French fur traders who entered what is now Southfield in 1812. In 1816, John Drysdale purchased land from the Ottawa tribe for $5 per acre (equivalent to $103,000 today). John Drysdale named his new township after himself, which he called "Dryden's Addition". Drysdaley had come from Detroit and was interested in developing land around what is now Southfield because it offered easy access to Huron River water power for his mills. In 1830, Samuel Morse built a mill on the north side of this stream; it became one of the most important businesses in town. Morse also donated land adjacent to his mill for a school; that school – still called Morse School – serves as one of downtown Southfield's oldest buildings. In 1840, David Whitmore purchased some property southwest of where present-day North Ave & Saginaw Rd meet and founded Whitmore Park Golf Course (& clubhouse), which has been home to professional golfers since 1906. A post office was established at SouthField by James Fenton in 1847; its name changed to “Southfield” in 1865 when it moved into its current building across Main Street from City Hall. After years of growth due largely to natural resources (especially oil) development near downtown SouthField during World War II and postwar decades—including an influx of refugees following World War II—the community reached its peak population size with more than 20,000 people by 1970s census estimates but declined rapidly thereafter due principally to declines in manufacturing jobs throughout south central Michigan while other parts of Michigan experienced faster growth (albeit with attendant environmental consequences). However, due efforts by numerous organizations over several decades culminating with establishment by then-Mayor Rick Snyder of citywide planning/development commission—which led eventually to reestablishment/promotion of downtown redevelopment as key dimension of city strategy—the population has trended upwards steadily since then Ratcheting up real estate values along corridor leading Downtown-> periphery-> central business district
