Southfield is a town in the Kalamazoo County, Michigan, United States. The population was 7,564 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name is from an Indian word meaning "place where corn will grow." Southfield was founded in 1836 by John P. Jones and other investors from Holland Township (now Muskegon Heights). The town grew rapidly due to its location on the newly completed Michigan Central Railroad and its close proximity to other towns and villages in what was then rural central Michigan. In 1854, Southfield became a village with a post office and two churches. In 1875, it became a city when it merged with neighboring East Lansing. In 1916, Southfield annexed the nearby town of Lathrop which had been established in 1865 as a result of land speculation by John Pitcairn Sr., son of John Pitcairn (a judge who helped found Detroit). This annexation created what is now known as the Lathrop-Southfield Micropolitan Statistical Area. During World War II, Southfield played host to many military installations including Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal near downtown and General Motors' Flint Proving Ground northwest of town. Many famous officers and soldiers lived or worked in Southfield during wartime including George Patton, Dwight D Eisenhower, Ulysses S Grant and Franklin D Roosevelt Jr.. After the war ended, many plants closed but several others such as GM's Flint Proving Ground continued operation until they were shut down by government regulation in 1978.

Southfield is a city in Michigan, United States. The population was 29,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wayne County and home to Southfield Township. The name "Southfield" comes from a nearby stream which was once known as South common creek. The first settlers in what is now Southfield were French Canadians who arrived in 1805. They named their settlement after Pierre-Simon LaFontaine, an officer in the Royal Canadian Army who had fought with them against American forces during the War of 1812. By 1830, the area had become part of Washtenaw County, Michigan; however, by 1836 it had formed part of Wayne County, Michigan due to its location on both sides of the Ottawa River. In 1850, John Sibley became one of the first white men to scout for new land in what would become Southfield Township when he bought 160 acres (70 hectares) east of present day Overlook Road from John Whitehead. In 1851 Sibley constructed a log cabin and called it New Home Place; this initial settler effort was followed by others until 1908 when all but two homes were destroyed by fire in what is now downtown Southfield. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln was fatally shot while campaigning for president in Illinois; news of his assassination reached Southfield early and led to celebrations throughout the township that evening as people mobbed entrances to local businesses and residences across town as they awaited word from Chicago about his death or burial site. This type of public demonstration dubbed "the great procession" later became regular event throughout southcentral Michigan following presidential funerals throughout America until President George Washingtons death in 2001). In 1901–1902 brick buildings were erected on Main Street between State and Cass streets west of current day Overlook Road; these structures served as courthouse annexes until 1922 when they were replaced by more traditional brick buildings at their current location east side off I-75 just north of downtown SouthFIELD
Southfield was founded in 1837 by George Washington Snyder and his partners. The town was named after Southfield Township, Michigan, which it annexation in 1847. In 1870, the township of Southfield merged into the borough of Northville.
