South Lyon is a town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. The community is part of the Grand Rapids metropolitan area. It was founded on July 3, 1824 by Danish immigrants as South Lyon Township. On December 12, 1836, it became a village and on January 1, 1938 it became a town. The first settler in what is now South Lyon Township was Johannes Christensen Rasmussen who arrived on February 15th of that year with his family from Jylland, Denmark. He built a cabin near what is now intersection of Michigan Avenue and Main Street and named it "Moses", after one of his ancestors who had come to America in 1634. In 1824 Johannes' great-grandson Rasmus Rasmussen started farming land east of present day South Lyon alongpresent day Huron Road/Highway 494 which he named Northvale after himself and his father's brother Nordahl Lund (Nordahl meaning "north" in Danish). In 1835 John Prentice came to the township from Ontario County and bought 2 acres (0.8 km²) south of present day Cedar Street for $100 cash only! This land would later become known as South Lyon Township Parkland which includes parts of both current north side streets between Cedar and Huron Roads including State Route 612 & Robert Haggerty Drive NW as well as areas just north of Highway 494 between Springbrook Rd./State Route 488 & Old Sylvan Rd./Highway 990NW currently used for agricultural purposes only! On July 3rd,1824 Jonas Ludvigsen purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) from John Prentice for $100 cash only! This land would later become known as South Lyon Township Parkland which includes parts of both current north side streets between Cedar and Huron Roads including State Route 612 & Robert Haggerty Drive NW as well as areas just north of Highway 494 between Springbrook Rd./State Route 488 & Old Sylvan Rd./Highway 990NW currently used for agricultural purposes only! In 1830 Ole Andreas Jensen purchase 1 acre (0.3 km²) west side road off present day Glenwood Drive westside lot from John Prentice for $50 cash only! This lot would later become known as East Side Road!! From this point forward all lots within the original boundaries were sold !! With this new start there were many families moving into the township during these early years !! Many farmers here continued to grow crops such as corn, beans etc., until about 1840 when railroads came to make transportation much easier! With better transportation options available things changed quickly ! Railroads brought people & goods like sugar beets etc., which caused prices to go up drastically making farming less profitable also making lumber harder to come by!!! Today most residents still farm some sort of agriculture with some manufacturing being done too

The village had been founded by John and Lucy Nicholson in 1804 as a result of their land grant from the government. The Village closed its doors for good in 1954 following the passage of the National Industrial Recovery Act which led to large-scale joblessness in Michigan. Today, South Lyon is best known for its association with General Motors, who manufactured cars there from 1925 until GM discontinued operations in 1984. Other notable businesses that have located here include the Wegmans grocery store and restaurant chain; Hecht's car dealership; and FirstEnergy Corporation, now Oneida Energy Company.

In the 1870s, the town developed into a small manufacturing center with a variety of businesses including mills, breweries and tanning facilities. The town experienced rapid growth in the early 1900s and during World War I it became an important military base. After the war, South Lyon experienced a period of decline as many businesses closed down and residents moved away. However, in the late 1920s and 1930s, the town began to rebounds as new businesses opened up and its population increased again. In recent years, South Lyon has seen some redevelopment which has led to more businesses opening up and increasing its population again
