South Lyon is a small town in the Calhoun County district of Michigan, United States. The population was 5,024 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to South Lyon were three brothers who came from New York in 1814. They named their new community after Sir Isaac Newton's hometown of Woolwich in England. South Lyon grew rapidly and by 1828 it had a population of 3,000. In 1836, Michigan voters approved a proposal to make South Lyon an incorporated village with a government by men only. On July 1, 1837, the village became known as South Lyon and its first mayor was John Vail. The village had two stores and twelve residents. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), many citizens served in the Union army or navy; among these were Wm Hickey (a soldier from nearby East Lansing) and John Paddock (the brother-in-law of Abraham Lincoln). When President Abraham Lincoln called for volunteers for his Mexican Expedition on April 15, 1865—just one day before he was assassinated—South Lyon native Alfred Thayer Mahan joined him on board the USS "Hidalgo" as an ensign. Mahan later became Rear Admiral Mahan during World War II and played an important role in naval operations against Japan during that conflict

South Lyon is a small community located in Macomb County, Michigan. The population was 1,531 at the 2010 census. South Lyon was named for General James M. South Lyon, who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War and later became a U.S. Senator from Michigan. The community sprang up around a Methodist Episcopal church that had been established in 1875. The first school in South Lyon was built on the corner of Elm Street and Main Street in 1876. In 1907, a new school building was erected on Elm Street across from the Methodist Episcopal church. In 1945, South Lyon High School opened on Cedar Avenue between Maple and Hawthorne Streets west of the village square. That year also saw the opening of an ambulance station on State Road 5 near High School Boulevard east of town boundaries; it is now used as a garage for local cars. In 1957, South Lyon Elementary School was merged into Northville Elementary School; both schools are now defunct but their land is still used by Northville Township for agricultural purposes. In 1978, South Lyon Middle School opened on Main Street adjacent to Cherry Hill Middle School; it too closed in 1998 when its students were transferred to nearby Northville Township middle schools). Finally, in 2006,South Lyon Intermediate Schoolsopened with grades 7-8 on Depot Road near US 41 north of town limits (it replaced an earlier elementary school which burned down). All three schools are currently defunct but their land is still used for agricultural purposes by Northville Township residents
