South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in Muskegon County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,541 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wyoming Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded on December 15, 1836 by John and Martha (Frazier) South Lyon. The first settler in what would become South Lyon was John Glover who arrived in 1836. In 1837, Daniel Wells moved to the community from Holland Township and became its first postmaster. By 1850, most of the people in South Lyon had arrived from Indiana or Ohio. Most of the early pioneers were farmers with some engaged in manufacturing such as wagon manufacturing and tannery production. One early resident named Cushman built a prefabricated tannery near present day Main Street and West Avenue in 1840 which produced leather goods including coats, boots and saddles for local farmers. Wire-weaving attracted attention from entrepreneurs such as Chauncey Wallis who started making wire fences around his farmsteads during this time period In 1847-48 Abraham Lincoln visited Muskegon County while campaigning for president and spent a night at South Lyon's Masonic Lodge #2 on October 9th when he delivered a speech on "The Union of Michigan". The next year saw an influx of Scandinavian immigrants when Sverre Aslund came to America via Norway with his family arriving on November 3rd aboard the USS Constitution which docked at Bay City that evening . After disembarking they proceeded to their new home until 1865 when they migrated back to Norway South Lyon received its municipal charter from Grand Rapids on January 5th 1870 . Prior to that it had been unincorporated territory managed by various postmasters . On May 25th 1906 local farmer Joseph “Joe” Pohl fashioned an 8x10 inch wood print entitled "A Pioneer Village" which hangs today inside the south door of the old Post Office Building located at 799 WMain St., now used as apartments South Lyon Historical Museum
Lyon Township was organized in 1824, and named for Lyon County, Indiana. The first post office in Lyon Township was established in 1830. A gristmill was erected on the Dearborn River in 1834, and a sawmill was built on the Ottawa River in 1840. The first school was founded in 1851. In 1865, Lyons Township became part of Lansing Township. On February 14, 1927, Lyon Township lost its charter as a result of the Michigan State Reform Act.
