In 1836, he and his family moved to the present site of South Lyon fromnative farm land west of Battle Creek. James Ewing's son-in-law also settled in South Lyon in 1836 and named it after himself - John Fenton (1802-1872). Fenton founded the town on land that he had bought from the Ottawa tribe for $1128.70 in 1840. The first store was built on Main Street by Fenton and his brother Elijah Clements around 1845. A post office called "South Lyon" was established at this location on July 10, 1850, under the name of New Burwell Springs; it remained in operation until 1897. In 1857, Jno Burt purchased a large tract of land east of town from Fenton for $5000 more than what Fenton had paid for it two years earlier. On November 8, 1861, Jno Burt opened a general store which became one of township's most important businesses for many years thereafter; this store played an important role as both a grocery and retail outlet for residents throughout its years of operation. During World War I (1914-1918), South Lyon served as one of four sites within Grand Rapids where munitions were manufactured to supply military forces all over Europe; during Prohibition (1937-1941), this business operated as an alcohol retailer selling liquor only to bona fide customers under special permit from the state government During World War II (1939-1945), when production hey stopped due to political restrictions placed on munitions Manufacturing by President Franklin D Roosevelt due to war concerns about potential atomic warfare dangers posed by Nazi Germany and Japan respectively during that time period South Lyons continued to serve as an arsenal supplying ammunition only to bona fide customers with no sales or marketing operations taking place beyond purchasing this type limited amount necessary exemption given other retailers having greater quantities available not subjecting themselves same non promotional restrictions .
