South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in Midwestern United States. The population was 2,612 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing–Intelcity, MI Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Lyon is located on the south side of Detroit River and about 20 minutes north of Lansing. The community was founded in 1881 by farmers from New York City who purchased land east of Detroit River on which they built homes. By 1926, the population had reached 1,500 and it grew to 3,000 by 1940. In 1951, South Lyon became a municipal police department with its own district and station. On July 1, 2006 South Lyon became a city with a mayor and city council form of government under the Michigan Constitution; however it retains its village character with limited powers granted to it by the charter amendment passed November 5th 2009. South Lyon has been mentioned in numerous books and articles about American cities during different periods throughout history including: "The Gilded Age", "The Story of Detroit", "Detroit – A History" as well as being featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2004 when she visited South Lyon to promote her book "The Life You Can Make". South Lyon is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Lyon Township is south of the city of Lansing and east of Ann Arbor. The first permanent settler in what is now South Lyon was Nicholas Woodruff on July 8, 1834. He and his family were the first to arrive in what would become Washtenaw County and they set up a cabin on a hill near present day Clearview Avenue and Saginaw Street. On December 12, 1835, John Prentice founded the village of South Lyon on land that he donated to the township for $500. On November 15, 1840, Alexander Jahn settled in what became South Lyon Township with his wife Anna Marie Jahn as his first wife. They built a log cabin on what is now Spring Road near present day Saginaw Street. In 1854 Josephine Dennison moved from Grand Rapids to start a schoolhouse for grades one through four at Old Main School House located where Main Street meets Woodward Avenue today. In 1865 Indianola Temple started services there also (it burned down in 1907). In 1928 W Haddad started Mishawaka Creamery here which continued until it closed down in 2002 due to health concerns about lead contamination from Flint water pipes being used by local businesses at that time It wasn’t until after World War II when people started moving into South Lyon specifically because of its proximity to Lake Huron that development really took off here with much brick making taking place throughout the late 1940s into early 1950s followed by heavy farming until an expansionist spirit developed around 1960 which led to more mixed use buildings being erected during this time including several churches and other commercial uses such as: Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Assembly Plant before it closed its doors permanently in 1976; then Eaton Corporation’s Macomb Truck Assembly Plant prior it closed too shuttered by 1990; finally Alcoa’s Pickering Works facility which opened up back then as an operations center but stopped production altogether by 2003 though some demolition has taken place over time) ground breaking ceremonies were held for both these factories while others like: Chrysler Group's Ram Truck Assembly Plant opened their door way back then also just outside of town limits however all this activity happened beneath bright blue skies only becoming visible occasionally if you happened upon any structures or sites that had been left unguarded over time such as Carpenter Mfg.'s truck stop across Depot Road from where current State Route 4 intersected Depot Road back then) eventually these factories became nothing more than memory items thanks largely to Revitalization Act of 2008 which declared them “ endangered historic resources” meaning not just their physical condition but also their cultural history could potentially be wiped away if not managed carefully due primarily to lack of public awareness about these properties circa 2009-2012 . However recent investments have begun to resurrect some aspects like: Factory tours are available starting May 1st each year when Labor Day weekend begins allowing interested individuals access beginning tastefully renovated buildings/sites inside or adjacent thereto during those days only); involvement by community organizations such as Heritage Organization Inc., who partner with state historical office creating original records & archives related thereto free & open 24/7; recently completed addition includes rehabilitation project costing nearly $3 million dollars resulting in new roofs & windows; renovation project at old county courthouse (which reopened its doors last fall after almost 2 years closure due mainly dueconcerns surrounding asbestos removal etc.) included new roofing & windows along with installation of new parking lot infrastructure
