South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Lyon Township government and is located in Washtenaw County. The community started as a log cabin on the banks of the Ottawa River in 1837 by three men from Canada: John Stephenson, James Fenton, and Alexander McKay. The first post office was established in 1838 and named for Major General Sir George Washington Stephenson (1784-1860). In 1839, a school was built on land donated by John McNaught and it operated until 1861 when it became an academy under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church. In 1868, South Lyon had its first store which served as a mercantile center for local farmers and others until 1898 when a railroad arrived to replace stagecoaches transporting goods east to west across the Great Lakes region. In 1896, South Lyon incorporated as a village and began to grow rapidly due to its location along the newly opened Michigan Central Railroad between Detroit and Grand Rapids. By 1910, South Lyon had reached its current size with an estimated population of 3,814 residents; however, this number would swell considerably during World War I due to military recruitment drives conducted by local businesses such as Lacey’s Department Store which employed soldiers on leave from their enlisted services throughout America. During World War II additional growth occurred due to wartime demand for materials produced in south central Michigan including aluminum products imported from China; however, despite significant increases in population sizes over time there has never been any large-scale relocation or departure from South Lyon - instead it has steadily grown more diverse both ethnically and linguistically speaking since becoming an officially designated “minority community” within Washtenaw County following federal legislation passed in 2000 that granted minority status to all villages within Washtenaw County with over 10% Latino residents or more regardless of race/ethnicity (See Appendix A). South Lyon is a small town in the Michigan Township of Clinton and is part of the Muskegon Heights School District. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It was organized in 1836 as a village, but it ceased to exist as a village in 1848 because of lack of support from the township government. The first settler in South Lyon was John Pemberton. He built a log cabin on the banks of the River Rouge about what is now Old South Lyon Road. A few years later, he married Martha Ladd and they moved into a more permanent home on land that still stands near present day Middlebury Road. In 1847, John and Martha had their first child, James Pemberton Jr., who would grow up to become an entrepreneur and one of South Lyon's most important citizens. In 1855, Indian Removal began and soon all Native Americans were gone from Michigan Township except for some couple hundred survivors living on reservations across east-central Indiana. Most villagers chose not to leave their homes or take up arms against what they saw as European invaders; however, James Pemberton led a small group of his own men southward to meet with United States troops at Fort Dearborn in order to request protection from being removed without any paperwork or compensation. This event is generally considered to be southern Lyons' beginning although prior thereto there may have been skirmishes between white settlers and Native American groups over hunting rights or other minor issues (e.g., property disputes). When General George Armstrong Custer arrived at Fort Dearborn on July 4th, 1862 seeking refuge from battle with General Tecumseh Sherman's Union force nearby (the Battle of Fort Gratiot), many residents – including James Pemberton – took advantage of his presence by hosting him for dinner at their home that night before escorting him back into town for safety reasons following skirmishes near Old South Lyon road whereupon Captain Lewis Peckman reports seeing "a great body"of Indians running towards Fort Dearborn; this information likely inspired General Custer's orders two days later ordering all cavalry troopers under Major Francis Ewing York march northwest towards Detroit alongselessly cutting off possible escape routes for the retreating Sioux forces northeast of Chicago while also allowing General Sherman free passage through Illinois should he decide to pursue them instead) It wasn't until 1863 when Congress abolished slavery within its borders that any economic development could really take place in southeastern Michigan due primarily to investment by northern investors coming downriver via steamboats; these New Englanders broughtTHOUSANDS OF DOLLARS worthworths worthof goods & equipmentassets&propertytoMichigantowardstheendofthe19thcenturybefore movingon DNationallydue tounationaluprisingoverlaborrights&politicalcorrectness etcetera etcetera etcetera). The area now known as South Lyon, Michigan was first settled in the late 18th century by French traders and settlers. The area was part of the Potawatomi Nation until they were forced to cede their land to the United States in 1836. South Lyon was originally called "Neenah" by the Native Americans, but it was anglicized to its current name in 1847 when the town became a county seat of Livingston County. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked Union forces at Battle of Corinth. The battle resulted in many casualties on both sides and also an important victory for Confederate forces. South Lyon's economy boomed after the war as businesses sprang up to provide goods and services needed by soldiers and families living in nearby cities such as Detroit and Lansing. In 1923, South Lyon became a city when it merged with neighboring East Lansing.
