South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now South Lyon was John Purdy, who arrived in 1834. By 1840, there were 10 residents living in what became known as "Purdy's Prairie." In 1847, J.D. Morris and his brothers began farming on land that would become South Lyon Township. The township was formed on March 14, 1848 from parts of Muskegon Heights and East Lansing townships. In 1861-1862 (the Second Civil War), South Lyon was one of six communities within the Union Army's Camp Butler along with Grand Rapids, Mackinaw City, Holland Landing and other areas in southern Michigan during the war effort to keep northern forces away from Weaqualand Creek which lay between Lake Huron and Detroit. The economic development of South Lyon began with the founding of a general store by James Aiken in 1907 which would grow into one of the most successful businesses in town today - Aiken's General Store & Restaurant - located inside the present day Midtown shopping mall across from Gratiot Avenue Elementary School on North Meridian Street just north of I-94 exit 362 eastbound off US Highway 12 (Old M-12). The store had an initial floor area of , selling items such as groceries and hardware; later it grew into a full size department store with multiple levels selling clothing, appliances and more specialized items not found elsewhere until well after ceded Western Michigan to statehood in 1927! South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 5,782 at the 2010 census. South Lyon is located on the southern edge of Grand Traverse County and is bordered by Lansing to the north, East Lansing to the east, and Monroe to the south. It is part of the Kalamazoo- rooting community and has been inhabited for over 350 years. The first permanent settler in what would become South Lyon was David Kline who arrived in 1824 from Holland. Kline named his land "K Township," after himself. After a few years, other pioneers including John Chilton and Solomon Stoddard also laid claim to tracts of land in what would become South Lyon Township. The township was organized on July 1, 1827 under Sheriff George Fenton as one unit with a total area of 3 square miles (10 km²). In 1830, Nicholas Nevin purchased 640 acres (250 ha) of land within present-day South Lyons Township which he called "Nevin's Farm." Over time Nevin donated additional land to South Lyon Township until it included 4square miles (10 km²) today's south side of State Street between Park Road andState Route 20A/21A/22A. In 1835, Jonas Sayers acquired 2 square miles (5 km²) from Nevin for $200 cash only - an important milestone because it meant that all future landowners had to contribute something toward public goods such as roads and schools. On February 15th, 1836 Mennonite preacher Abraham Lapp offered one acre (40 m2) near present day Good Shepherd Lutheran Church for sale at $1 per acre ($8 per hectare). This offer helped spur development around Good Shepherd LutheranChurch as people began looking for affordable housing outside Detroit during this time period. Other early settlers were Isaac Beiler and Jacob Backus who both bought property along Iron Road west of present day Good ShepherdLutheranChurch in 1840s; they named their holdings Beaver Dam or Brachtenwalde after family trees back home in Germany where they had ancestry dating back centuries old! In 1865 Indian Treaty No 6 ceded all tribal lands east of Huron River – including most of what would become South Lyons Township – to United States government through treaty negotiations with Ottawa leadership led by General Fordyce Washington Jr.. At this time much like many other Native American groups throughout Western Michigan this territory was annexed into US Territory Kansas under General Order No 137 dated September 9th 1865 following Wyandotte War final peace treaty signing at Fort Wayne Indiana that ended hostilities between United States Forces & Creek Nation
