South Lyon, MI is a small town in the Kalamazoo Valley of Michigan. The population was 2,372 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Muskegon Heights Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first inhabitants of what is now South Lyon were Native Americans who lived in and around what are now Muskegon Heights and Hope Township before moving to their present location in 1798. In 1827, South Lyon was chartered as a township by act of the Michigan Legislature. In 1892, an Act of Congress designated the township as one hundred acres (0.40 km2) south of Indian Village Road on upper Grand River west of its present intersection with State Street and east of what is now Washtenaw Avenue. This boundary change gave rise to the name “South Lyon” which has been retained by most residents ever since. The first post office in South Lyon was established on October 1, 1903; it continued operations until it was discontinued on February 15, 1935. After World War II, many farmers left farming for new businesses such as steel processing or services related to manufacturing during the postwar boom years that followed; however some agricultural families remain active today in growing crops or raising animals indoors while still having access to outdoor activities such as hunting and fishing opportunities nearby

South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in the northwestern corner of the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census, down from 4,046 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Grand Rapids–Wixom metropolitan area and is surrounded by Lansing to the north and east, Hillsboro to the south, and Grand Rapids to the west. The township was established in 1837 as a result of land grants from James K. Polk and his wife Julia Boggs Polk. South Lyon's first post office opened in 1839 with George Waddell as its first clerk. The town grew rapidly due to timber resources that were abundant in that part of Michigan during this time period. In 1860, John Juhl became chairman of South Lyon Township Committee which helped spur growth within South Lyon Township and also founded the first Kendall schools in 1865-66; these schools were later upgraded into high schools known as Southeastern High School (now Wolverine Valley Community College), East Lansing High School (later Lansing County Technical Institute), and South Lyon Middle/High School (now South Lyon Intermediate School). In 1870, lumber operations ended due to an overproduction crisis caused by improved transportation methods brought about by railroads; however, strong growth continued until around 1920 when there was a significant decline in industry which led to shrinking tax base and loss of jobs for many residents who left for better opportunities elsewhere. In 1926-27 local officials formed a "Community Improvement Association" or "CIA" which undertook various projects such as reforestation initiatives on what are now private property lines surrounding town; increased streetlights; installation of municipal sewers; improvement work on public buildings such as churches and schoolhouses including new sidewalks and roofs; erection of storm drains leading from creek beds near homes into downtown cores thereby helping reduce flooding problems) Significant progress has been made since then including enactment of villagehood status for South Lyon through an act passed by both houses of the Michigan Legislature on November 6th 2009 recognizing exceptional community development efforts dating back more than sixty years while preserving certain civic rights enjoyed by other villages located within similar boundaries A primary focus for recent municipality effort has been economic revitalization with development taking place throughout downtown core areas along several large corridors providing access to quality job opportunities outside village limits while creating new retail businesses Downtown including several popular grocery stores anchors by Dillard's Home Depot Inc., Walmart Supercenter & Meijer Grocery Outlet - making it one major shopping center within minutes' walk thereof - having numerous additional services available nearby such as health care via clinics operated out of First United Methodist Church or charter schools operated under auspicesofSouthLyonLibrary
