South Lyon is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,397 at the 2010 census. The first people to live in South Lyon were the Potawatomi and Miamis. The town was platted by George Hennepin in 1824. It was named after General Hulls Department of War Affairs post on the river south of present-day South Lyon. South Lyon became a town on November 1, 1868, when it amalgamated with Pettigrew Township. On December 15, 1907, South Lyon and parts of Pettigrew Township merged into the newly formed city of Detroit. In 1916 South Lyon voted to secede from Detroit due to differences over water rights for a new water plant being built in the township by Detroit Mayor James Norris. In 1930 South Lyon had a population of 463. Its last census showed its population as 1,028; however it has since increased more than 500%. During World War II many residents turned their homes intoacks to provide housing for soldiers stationed nearby in southern Michigan and Illinois; during this time several churches were also constructed near Little Elm Road (now Hamtramck Boulevard). After the war ended there continued growth as many people moved back into South Lyon and began businesses such as dry cleaner shops and restaurants which continue until this day; today's downtown district features several fine shops including Macy's Department Store still open today that have been here since 1926!
