It is located in Washtenaw County and lies on the southern edge of the Grand Traverse Bay National Lakeshore. The name "South Lyon" comes from an Indian word meaning "place where the sun sets." The first settler in what became South Lyon was John Pickering, who came to the area in 1834. He named his settlement after Sir James Southall, 1st Baronet. At that time, south of Chicago, Illinois, there was only one way to get to Detroit – by riverboat. So Pickering built a ferryboat called Tripsville for passengers and goods to cross the MIRA (Mississippi River). The first store in town opened in 1836. In 1842, South Lyon incorporated as a village under the name of Northville. In 1868, a group of businessmen led by Andrew Mellon founded Detroit Manufacturing Company on East Spaulding Street in downtown Detroit with a goal of creating new industrial jobs for working-class residents throughout Dearborn Township and Wayne County. This company grew into one of America's most successful corporations and soon produced products such as radios, automobiles and tires for other companies around the world. In 1923 South Lyon's current shopping center was completed on Main Street; it remains today one of its most popular tourist attractions due to its variety of stores including national chains like Sears and JCPenney as well as smaller businesses lining four blocks long main street between Spaulding and State streets. In 1941 World War II began when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor; many people from South Lyon enlisted or were drafted into service immediately because they knew their towns would be destroyed if war started elsewhere within their community. South Lyon is a small town in southern Michigan, United States. The population was 6,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-Wixom-Farmington metropolitan area. The community began as a farming village in 1836, and rapidly grew as an agricultural center for the region. After WWI, South Lyon became a key industrial center for Michigan's auto industry. Today, it is home to several factories and businesses including South Lyon Tire & Rubber Company and Lakeshore Manufacturing Inc., both of which are among Michigan's largest employers. The first permanent settler in what would become South Lyon was John Haggerty who arrived on April 15, 1836. He formed a company with other farmers to purchase 4 acres (1 hectare) of land from James Laughlin for $600. By 1840, Haggerty had two houses built on his land - one now known as the Old House (now a museum), and the other now known as the North House. In 1848, he married Sarah Allison and she moved into their house with him until her death in 1850; they also purchased another piece of land that same year for $200 from George Stephenson. In 1856, John Fenton established himself in what is now South Lyon by purchasing 160 acres (6 hectares) of land from Benjamin Houghton east of present day Main Street and north of Ionia Road – this parcel would later be called Government Hill after Fenton sold it to local farmer Samuel Granger in 1865 for $2 per acre ($16 million today). At this time Fenton was one of only a few local farmers who could offer profitable agriculture products such as cornmeal and flour due to his location along Genesee River Valley Roads 1&2 just outside Lansing proper – high demand led him to improve Highway 7 between Lansing & Farmington during his lifetime despite budget cuts caused by Great Depression years 1922-1929 which impacted all manufacturing throughout southeast Michigan . By 1860 there were over 100 residents living in what would become South Lyon when post office opened under new name “Lansing” on October 11th with David Dyer serving as Postmaster until 1870 when he resigned due to health reasons; Milton Earle took over after that date until 1880 when office closed because railroad tracks were built through town forming much needed commercial artery within 2 miles radius; school Bus service commenced on May 1st1881 by Mrs Sanger operated out front lot across street from Methodist Church/First Presbyterian Church mentioned earlier
South Lyon is a city in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 9,859 at the 2010 census. South Lyon is the county seat of Wayne County. It is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. The first known permanent settler in what is now South Lyon was John Cavanaugh of Canada who arrived in 1834. He named his farm "Cavanagh's Prairie." A post office called Cavanagh's Prairie was established in 1837, and remained in operation until 1861. In 1851, James Matson purchased the farm from John Cavanaugh for $4 per acre (which at that time was an enormous sum). Matson began to develop this land into a cotton plantation with slave labor. By 1865, Matson had acquired over 100 slaves and built a large mansion on the property which he called "The Plantation". The house still stands today as one of the most impressive examples of antebellum architecture in south Lyon Township. Mason's cotton plantation failed due to harsh weather conditions and eventually he sold his slaves back to their owners. In 1865, South Lyon became a town when it became part of Wayne County under Act No.(24) of that year which designated certain townships within Wayne County as townships instead of villages or villages because they were deemed more convenient for township government purposes. A post office called South Lyon was established in 1867, and remain active until 1914. South Lyon experienced significant growth during World War I due to its location near Detroit; however, after Germany invaded Russia on June 22nd 1918, American troops evacuated South Lyon without warning on July 3rd 1918 and never returned home despite offers by Mayor Harry Sievers (D-Detroit) to stay and help fight against Nazi Germany but no such offer was received from either side following German occupation forces' entry into our country subsequent day - July 8th 1918 . After World War I ended there continued rapid growth as many people left Detroit for new opportunities; however much industrialization took place outside city limits during this time period making it difficult for downtown businesses & residents to keep up with increased development rates inside city limits
