South Lyon is a small, rural town in the U.S. state of Michigan, located about 15 miles east of Lansing on the Ottawa River. The population was 1,719 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kalamazoo–Grand Rapids metropolitan area and is adjacent to Lansing and East Lansing. The town was founded in 1827, when three brothers purchased land from Potawatomi Indian Chief Big John Blackwing. In 1847, South Lyon became a township under the jurisdiction of Shiawassee County. On July 1, 1868, it became a city under the jurisdiction of Macomb County. In 1906, South Lyon merged with neighboring East Lansing to form one large city entity known as "Lansing-South Lyon." The two cities continued to operate separately until they were combined on January 1, 1957 under the name "South Lyon-East Lansing." The merger had no impact on residents' voting rights or other municipal responsibilities; however it increased economic development for both cities by creating more jobs in production plants and businesses within their respective boundaries. On October 12, 2014 South Lyon voters passed an ordinance authorizing annexation into Grand Rapids by south Lyons voters if agreed upon by both municipalities; this measure was subsequently approved by Grand Rapids Township trustees on November 2nd after being amended to add annexations from other nearby townships such as Hillsdale and Oakland Heights without having any input from either municipality's governing body. This event marked a turning point for south Lyons as it became clear that its annexation potential had been recognized by larger municipalities in metro Detroit which now placed greater importance on its growth potential within their jurisdictions
