South Lyon, Michigan is a small town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The community was established in 1871 and had a population of 341 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing-East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. South Lyon is home to South Lyon High School and South Lyon Airport. Located on the eastern side of Macomb County, south of the city of Lansing and east of Midland, South Lyon was founded by fur trappers in 1871 as a small post office named after John Glover Dearborn. The post office was renamed South Lyon in 1908 when it merged with neighboring village Albion. At the time it had a population of just 12 people. The first store opened in July 1870 within present-day South Lyon near where Main Street now meets Washington Avenue. This store became known as "the general store" because it served most needs for residents including groceries, ammunition, hardware and other supplies needed during the early days of settlement in what would become Macomb County. In 1874 First National Bank opened its doors within present day South Lyon with $5000 capitalization which made it one of the largest banks west of Chicago at that time. By 1915 First National bank had grown to over $100 million assets including deposits throughout central Michigan and northern Illinois! In 1927 First National Bank merged with Jardine & Rice to form Jardine Rice & Company which still operates today as one of America's largest wholesale food distributors! Other early businesses included: Blacksmith shop (1875), wagon drive (1876), Lumber Yard (1877), Cheese Factory (1879), Grain Mill (1880) - all built by start-up entrepreneurs who were determined to bring their new venture to success! As business grew more complex so too did infrastructure; this included an addition to the building fronting Main Street which housed a large garage for multiple cars until 1922 when it was replaced by an even larger structure housing several retail businesses including grocery stores, Dry Goods Merchants Association etc., along with IGA Bazaar later becoming another major local supermarket chain! A number Of schools also sprung up around this time such as: Notre Dame de la Garonne School (1901), Holy Cross School(1903), Sacred Heart School(1905) while many homes were erected providing much needed affordable housing during those tough times………..Today many families enjoy walking or biking through beautiful old town streets lined with period architecture while exploring some amazing 19th century pioneer enterprises like Tryon Wellness Center located on Niles Road…. truly experiencing “Little America” from whence came our nation’s identity!!!
The area now known as South Lyon was first settled by the Potawatomi tribe in 1786. The area became a part of the United States in 1812 when it was ceded to Michigan under the Treaty of Gadsden. In 1840, the village of South Lyon was founded and incorporated as a village by Michigan state legislators. The population of South Lyon grew rapidly during the 19th century, reaching more than 5,000 residents by 1884. The village experienced significant growth during World War I, with over 100 residents serving in the military. In 1938, South Lyon merged with neighboring villages of West Allis and Niles to form the city of South Lyon.
