South Lyon is a small town in the Kalamazoo-Lansing metropolitan area of Michigan. The population was 5,468 at the 2010 census. It is located on the shore of Lake Huron, about 25 miles northwest of Detroit. South Lyon is part of the Marquette Township government and services are provided by its three public schools: South Lyon High School, East Lansing Middle School, and North Branch Elementary School. The township also has a fire department and post office. The first settler in what became South Lyon was James Hickey in 1824. There were no permanent residents until 1854 when John Sitton purchased land from Elisha Selfridge for $2 per acre (about $10 per square mile). By 1870 there were 105 people living in South Lyon Township; it consisted of just over a square mile (just under 2 km²). In 1881, Leland Stanford bought 640 acres southeast of South Lyon for $10 an acre (about $160 per square kilometer). Because this land was so valuable, he quickly began to develop it into one of Michigan's most successful farmland operations. In 1916 he donated 1,000 acres to Marquette Township for use as a suburb called Stanford Village. Today much of that original Stanford Village still stands includingStanford Pavilion which houses the municipal offices and library as well as several shops and restaurants - including Pabst Brewing Company which opened its first location here in 1914! In 1935 local resident Floyd McKnight started JCPenney Department Store here on Main Street near Clinton Road. The store continued operation until 1984 when it closed down due to financial problems. One significant development associated with this store was that it helped spur off more than 150 other businesses around southern Michigan which would eventually form what we now know as Walmart! That same year South Lyon lost its only school when East LansingMiddle moved to nearby East Lansing after years of effort by parents to keep their child’s education within reach! However, soon enough another elementary school would open up - North Branch Elementary School - making up for what had been lost at East Lansing Middle! Nowadays many things have changed since then like Verizon Wireless expanding their network into our town center almost doubling their size within 3 years (!), Ford moving production from Dearborn Heights all the way downriver to River Rouge producing some 50% more vehicles annually than they ever did before while laying off almost everyone who worked at Dearborn Heights!, Apple opening two stores right next door across from our high school (!), even Google announced plans back in 2018 to build an enormous new campus right outside our town limits – complete with housing and employment opportunities ! So much has happened since then that you could easily get lost tryingTo track everything down but thankfully we have various sources such as Wikipedia or Google Maps if needed! South Lyons is known throughout south central Michigan for their famous pears - specifically those found near Clinton Road/Main Street where JCPenney once stood

The Township of South Lyon was formed in 1836 and named for Captain Elijah Woodruff, an early settler in that area. The Village of South Lyon was organized on April 15, 1896 by Order of the Day #4 from among those who had petitioned to form the village. The first Mayor was Wm Henson and First Vice Mayor were John Laughlin and James Moffat. On November 6, 1898 the village charter was amended to permit a school system with an enrollment of up to 25 students per grade level! On December 2, 1907 a fire destroyed most of the business district including many homes in what is now North Park Avenue.ettlement began anew with businesses opening in this new location on January 1st 1908 ! In 1909 there were 8 residents employed as grocery storekeepers when 3 stores opened !! In 1916 there were 10 residents employed as farm hands when 5 farms opened !! In 1922 there were 11 residents employed as farm hands when 7 farms opened !! In 1926 there were 12 residents employed as farmhands when 2 farms closed down !! In 1928 there were 13 residents employed as storekeepers when 9 stores opened !! In 1930 there were 16Residents employed as storekeepers when 4 stores closed down !! On January 1st 1932 all but one family left for Illinois due to high taxes which had become unbearable and a lack of other opportunities in their community !
