South Lyon is a town in Washtenaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,668 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lansing–East Lansing Metro area. South Lyon is located on the southern bank of the Ottawa River, opposite Flint. The first settler in what would become South Lyon was John Smeaton in 1837. He and his family built a log cabin on a small island in the river and named it "Smyrna." In 1840, James Perkins moved to South Lyon from Farmington Hills and began trading goods with Indians on the riverbank. In 1845, he married Mary Ann White; they had four children. In 1847, John Ladd bought land from Perkins for $1,000 and started construction on what would become Southeastern Michigan's first cotton gin (later known as Jackson-Ladd). The plant operated until 1865 when it was replaced by one built by George Washington Hunt of Harper Woods Township. Hunt also developed nearby Taylor Lake into an impoundment forManitoba Canal boats that operated during the late 19th century and early 20th century In 1853-54, Thomas Jorgensen arrived in South Lyon from Holland with his family to farm land he had purchased near Bytown before moving to Minto County in 1850 In 1861-62 David Sell became engaged to Mrs Catherine Cook of West Bloomfield Township; they were married at Stonington Presbyterian Church while Rev Sell officiated shortly afterward On October 5th 1862 David Sell died suddenly after leading a horseback ride through farmland west of town to view some cornfields which he thought might be rich enough to buy . His wife Catherine continued farming until her death about 1966 ; their son David Jr., now 82 years old lives in South Lyon with his wife Elsie who died about 1984 They raised six children: three daughters (Doris Cook Pyle), two sons (John Cook Wilson)
In 1836, a group of farmers and their families moved from Indiana to what is now South Lyon, Michigan. The town was platted in 1837 by the government and named for General Lewis Cass. The first post office was established in South Lyon in 1840. In 1856, the town became a village and had its own schoolhouse. The first railroad reached South Lyon in 1867. In 1907, the town became an incorporated municipality and has since grown into a major community with over 30 businesses.
