One early settler in South Lyons was Captain John Butterfield who arrived in 1795 and built a trading post near present day North East Avenue and Main Street In 1836, following his victory over Native Americans at Battle of Blackwater Heights, General Anthony Wayne decided to establish a new frontier settlement near what is now Detroit on Muskegon Lake known as Fort Wayne Park which he named after his brother-in-law Sir George Washington Carleton II (1763 –1847). The area became known as North Eastern Township due to its location northeast of present day Detroit. It wasn't until 1860 that Indian Removal began and all or most of the Potawatomi people were forced northward into Indiana Territory along with their belongings As more settlers came through south central Michigan during the late 1800s and early 1900s, many found opportunity in farming or lumbering opportunities available hereabouts which led to rapid growth within South Lyon during this time period. Many sawmill owners set up shop hereabouts becoming some of America’s earliest industrialists; among them were Cyrus McCormick who founded McCormick & Co., Wm Matson who ran one of America’s first breweries (the pioneer Brewing Company), Gifford Pinchot Jr who served as Ulysses S Grant’s Assistant Secretary for Agriculture under Rutherford B Hayes (1862 - 1885)and Jens Jensen whose company developed First National Bank (now HSBC) Many businesses remain active today such as Smith Federal Insurance Agency which opened its doors in 1984; Resource Graphics which has been located heresince 1978; United States Postal Service Station #1which reopened following extensive renovation/updates last year; Republic Paper Products Inc.; American Cheese Wholesale Corporation where cheese products are sold online only; Southern Belle Tire & Rubber Co.; Midland Grain Elevator Co.; Ford Motor Company plant number two west side; First National Bank building Number 2 on Woodward Avenue Click Here For A Photo Gallery Of Some Of This History
