South Lyon is a town in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. The community was founded in 1855 by farmers from Canada and is named after Samuel South Lyon, an early settler. It was incorporated as a village in 1907. The first post office in South Lyon was established on December 12, 1856, and served until it closed on July 7, 1860. The first settlers were three brothers: John Witherspoon (1812-1871), James Purdy (1815-1868), and David Dixon (1796-1875). They came to the area from Canada with their families over the winter of 1853/4. The Witherspoons had been land investors in Saginaw County since they arrived there in 1827. James Purdy married Susannah Eaton of Detroit on February 2, 1837; they had four children: David (born 1840), Anna (born 1845), John A., Jr.(born 1850), and Sarah Moseley(born 1852). The area now known as South Lyon, Michigan was visited by the Huron people in the late 17th century. The first permanent European settlement in what is now South Lyon Township was made in 1793 when French farmers discovered a rich gold mine on the west side of the Ottawa River. The settlers named their new community after Pierre-Jean La Salle, Sieur de la Salle, who had explored and found the site. South Lyon Township was organized in 1814 and named for John Lyon, a French fur trader who had traveled through this area previous to his discovery of the gold mine. The township's initial population consisted of about fifty families. By 1824, however, South Lyon had grown to over one hundred citizens. In 1827, construction began on a schoolhouse located on what is now home of Lafayette Elementary School. This brick building served as both a school and administrative center for the township until it was replaced by present-day South Lyon High School in 1924. South Lyon became an official village status within Detroit County on October 15, 1870. On November 3rd, 1915, South Lyon voters passed an ordinance establishing its own fire department which would serve as one of the earliest municipal governments within that county. Throughout its history as an incorporated village and later villagehood, South Lyons has maintained close ties with its larger neighbor to the south - Lafayette - both through economic exchange and social activities enjoyed by both villages alike such as theatrical productions or Fourth of July celebrations (the largest ever staged at Lafayette). In 1969, following years of growth throughoutSouthLyon Township due to suburban development along I-94W., Mayor Thurston announced plans for annexation of neighboring East Lansing Township which would have added more than two thousand residents to town boundaries by 1974! However, due to objections from East Lansing residents primarily centered around noise issues during busy city holidays such as Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Eve - among other concerns - annexation never occurred beyond tentative discussion stage until recent years when some progress has been made towards final planning goals including minorityborrowing rights for young girls running businesses adjacent to local high schools; possible bike/walking paths connecting different neighborhoods within town limits; potential expansion into southwest corner town where I-94 meets US 127; potential annexation into neighboring Livingston County should there be significant growth therein over several decades)
