Doren told them that he had been driving cattle across the Grand River when he saw an angel fly down from the sky and drive away all the stock belonging to another settler named Miller. He also said that he had seen Jesus Christ walking on Earth as He rode into town with His disciples. After hearing this story, some LDS members decided to move back into Illinois while others continued their travel upriver. In 1840-1841, Methodist ministers traveled through what is now Michigan Territory doing missionary work among Indian people including south side Mormons under leadership by Franklin Richards Jr.. They also organized anti-slavery rallies throughout much of Illinois against efforts being made by Stephen Douglas and his party in Congress to end slavery within the United States In 1850-1851, two groups of men led by Orion Prentice settled at what is now North Park inSouth Lyon Township after trekking from Canada via Mackinac Island . One group operated a mill until 1862;the other erected a store and Post Office about 1870 before moving out westward along I Road about 1880 . In 1872-73 , local farmers started harvesting winter wheat during early summer; however , it rained so hard that they did not get any harvestable crops . From 1898 until 1909 there was an annual fair which attracted buyers and sellers from all over northern Indiana
The first white people to live in what is now South Lyon were the Pembina band of Dakota Indians, who called the area "Tanka." The town was platted in 1853 by David W. Mason and John F. Slocum, two men from Minnesota. At that time, it consisted of just a few homes and a school. In 1875, the town become the county seat for Wayne County when it was created from part of Oakland County. In 1912, South Lyon residents voted to annex part of Muskegon Heights as their own municipality. This led to conflict between the new municipalities over water rights and other issues. The annexation didn't take effect until 1922 when both municipalities merged into one. South Lyon's economy has been based on agriculture since its establishment as a townsite. Today, many businesses operate in the town including four grocery stores, three convenience stores, two auto parts stores, a funeral home, and a bank.
