South Lyon, Michigan is a town in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest community in Wayne County by population. Ammunition manufacturing began in South Lyon in 1875 and continued until 1942. The industry produced pistols and rifles for both American and World War II military use. It also created jobs for local residents. Ammunition manufacture ended due to pressure from regulation by the National Firearms Act of 1934, which made firearms more difficult to obtain and control. Today, ammunition production occurs mainly through retail sales of reloadable rounds and targets.

The town was established in 1869 by John Rountree and his brother-in-law, David Earnest. South Lyon is a small community with a large history. It was named after the south side of Lyon Lake which lay to the east of town. The first settler in South Lyon was John Rountree who arrived in 1869. After a few years, he sold his land to David Earnest who founded the village of South Lyon on January 11th 1870. The village had six storehouses and an Agricultural Fairgrounds that could accommodate up to 2,000 people each day during the early days of South Lyon’s existence. There were also three dwellings for residents which can still be seen today: one on Main Street and two on Fourth Avenue near intersection with Seventh Street. In 1875, JF Drysdale opened a flour millinery in South Lyons which became one of the largest flour mills in northwest Michigan. In 1907, A&P grocery open their first store here and until World War II this store was the largest employer within town limits.. In 1949, North American Paper Company built their paper plant here which continues to operate today as part of FirstMerit Banknorthwest Michigan division

The next year saw another increase in population with the arrival of Germans who began arriving during World War I. By 1921, there were 4,000 residents living in South Lyon Village. During World War II (1939-1945), South Lyon played an important role as an airfield for the Allies and was home to many factories that produced weapons and munitions during that time period. One such factory was Ford Motor Company's Rouge Plant which manufactured vehicles for both American Allied forces and Axis forces alike (). After World War II ended, South Lyon continued to experience growth withthe arrival of new residents and businesses who desired to set up shop in this rural community located within easy access to major highways and economic opportunities throughout Washtenaw County (). By 1840, the population had grown to around 100 people. The first school was built in 1841, and the town became a village in 1853. In 1865, South Lyon incorporated as a city.
