South Lyon, Michigan is a town in Montcalm County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. South Lyon is part of the Grand Rapids–West Bloomfield–East Lansing Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Lyon" means east of the river in French and has been used by the town since 1852. The first settlement in what is now South Lyon Township was made on July 4, 1837 by Levi Coffin and others as part of a large land grant from General Andrew Jackson to numerous settlers in what are now Ionia County and Lenawee County. Colonel John Lapp took up residence on July 10th and began to build a log cabin which he named after his friend Pierre Jourdain who had come downriver with him. This initial settler community was located on present day Old Hwy 9 south of the current village site. In 1840 James Purdy built a sawmill on the River Raisin about three miles north-northeast of today's village site. By 1845 there were twelve men living in this early pioneer community along with one woman and three children who helped support their families with farm produce, lumber or fishing from the river and local game hunting. In 1850 Josephine Nevin founded an African American school for black students near present day South Lyon village as well as establishing two churches – First Baptist Church (1851) which served mainly white residents until 1861 when it became African American Methodist Episcopal; Second Baptist Church (1857) which served primarily black residents until 1914 when it became Congregationalist United Church of Christ. At this time both denominations amalgamated into one church known as First Presbyterian Reformed Evangelical Church (1914). During World War II many citizens enlisted in military service including Ernest Hemingway who worked at Ford Motor Company while serving overseas; Al Capone; Clarence Dillon; Harry Bridges; Orville Wright Jr.; Lester Young also working for Ford Motor Company during that time frame across many factories throughout North America including Dearborn Heights/Detroit., but none where more famous than awarded posthumous Medal of Honor recipient Private First Class Jack Golden who died June 17th 1945 while serving with Headquarters Battery 2nd Battalion 5th Marines Regiment Combat Infantry Unit 3rd Marine Division during combat operations around Saigon Province Vietnam.. As South Lyon grew larger businesses sprang up such as grocery store Stroud's (1927), carnival company Wayne's World Fairground (1929), re-creation business Quiznos Pinball Arcade(1982)), Hotel Stroud's Cadillac Ranch Resort & Casino(2005)), new golf course designed by members of The Masters Tournament Committee(2006) - home to world’s largest putt putt green -Wayne Hills Country Club), tire dealership Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co.(1986)).........Today much smaller businesses have continued to thrive such as convenience store Gartner's Grocery(1998)), Masonic Lodge No 775 West Main Street(2002))......And last but not least there still remains much possibility for future growth through redevelopment or even establishment of huge new businesses within walking distance....... The township was established officially by act dated Aug 16 1870 from territory acquisitions made westward overland under direction of Governor Abraham Lincoln...The first house built here may have been erected soon after its organization...In 1872 Wm Fitch acquired 640 acres adjoining this township lying west off main street....This tract included all that later became South Lyon Township...Fitch laid out this township according to plat prepared March 6th 1872 by John Aiken...He farmed about 20 acres Hereon till about 1880 when he sold his interest to Geo Burtis for $500 cash..Burtis donated all his land east side Of Main Street To Col George Robb For Schools And Streets

The first permanent settlement in what is now South Lyon was made on July 4, 1814 when Peter Stroud and his party of settlers discovered land that would later become Lansing Township and Battle Creek Township. In 1824, John Fitch built a cabin on what is now North Main Street. The town's first school was built in 1828 by Wm Hickey and burned down in 1829 due to an arson attempt by local residents; however, a new school was soon erected on West Main Street. In 1830s two brothers named Jarvis started a grocery store called "The Jarvis House" on Detroit Road just east of present day South Lyon Drive; this store served as the town's main trade hub for merchants who traveled through or needed to sell goods near Lansing and Battle Creek townships. In 1854, Jonas Suttles donated land to build a blacksmith shop which became known as Suttles' forge; this gave South Lyon its first commercial enterprise other than farming or manufacturing. In 1865, following the Civil War southward migration commenced with large numbers of soldiers seeking work in the Union army during Reconstruction Period; many farmers began moving into areas such as South Lyon due to these opportunities although some continued farming operations until after World War II when mechanization increased production values across all agricultural sectors worldwide resulting in loss of jobs for workers within rural communities throughout America caused by technological advances/changes New technologies lead to mass displacement or unemployment within traditional industries leaving rural communities high & dry while also opening up resources (euphemistically called "urban sprawl") leading to financial ruin for those unable or unwilling to adjust/ migrate While most Americans were content with their lifestyles they experienced increasing social unrest attendant with changes brought about by new technologies: rapid growth rates for suburban livingGuided bus transportation became available free& convenient via television networks which led people away from working farms & villages towards cities where job opportunities were plentiful but rents were high Meanwhile suburban development gradually replaced smalltown populations within metropolitan areas characterized by cultural diversity whereas smalltown neighborhoods had retained much Of their character & community spirit
South Lyon, Michigan is located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and has a history dating back to 1836. It remained an American territory until 1898 when Mexico ceded it to America as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
