According to the National Firearms Act of 1934, firearms must be registered with the government in order to be possessed. This act also requires that firearms owners must keep their firearms in a safe place and transport them no more than 25 miles from their residence. In addition, federal law prohibits the manufacture or sale of any machinegun that can fire more than 10 rounds per minute. Machineguns are defined as any weapon that fires more than seven rounds per minute. This law also banned the possession of certain types of pistols, such as those made by Smith & Wesson and Colt handguns. These weapons were designed for use only against other humans and could not fire more than eight rounds per minute. The Gun Control Act of 1968 expanded this ban to include all handguns except revolvers manufactured before May 1, 1934. This act also banned shotguns and submachine guns that could discharge 20 rounds per minute or more without being registered with the government. The Gun Owners Protection League (GOPA) lobbied for these changes, arguing that these new restrictions would prevent gun-related tragedies from happening in America. The NRA opposed these regulations and instead argued that these laws were necessary to protect Americans from crime because handguns are less likely to be used in crimes committed with hand grenades, rocket launchers, or knives. In response to GOPA’s efforts, Congress passed the National Firearms Act Amendments of 1976 which increased ammunition capacity for machineguns while limiting magazine size to five rounds per clip and added a provision allowing people who possess machineguns registration them with the government
