Despite this modest amount of precipitation however, many activities enjoy either sunny or bright days throughout most year thanks to good air circulation rates which ensure moderate temperatures year-round regardless of location within the metropolitan area

Sault Ste. Marie is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, and the capital of Sault Ste. Marie County. The population was 67,521 at the 2010 census.[1] The first European settlement in what is now Sault Ste. Marie was by French fur traders in 1739 who named it La Pointe aux Meadows after their point of departure from Canada on their voyage to the Great Lakes region. The area around present-day Sault Ste. Marie was first inhabited by Native Americans and later by fishermen and farmers before becoming a town in 1837 when the US Congress created Mackinac County, Michigan as part of a larger territory east of Detroit including present-day Ontario and parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. The name "Sault" (salt) comes from two early French words meaning cape or headland: la Pointe aux Meadows (the point where they came ashore) and Ile à Saumarez (Island at Sailors' Bay). In 1846, the village site was chosen for incorporation as a town under George Caton Wright's Law Act; the act became effective on October 1, 1847[2][3]. The first post office opened in May 1840,[4] and served as the community's seat until November 1861 when it moved to nearby Hudsonville; it reopened on December 2, 1861.[5][6] One reason why Hudsonville may have been selected as its new seat was that access to water supplies through rapids nearby made it difficult for most other communities to build up anything more than transient populations during this time period; also, there had been few permanent residents since then due largely to factors such as continuing wars with Mexico which disrupted trade along both sides of Lake Huron[7]. With only occasional flooding reaching their lowlands,[8] early settlers were able to develop farmland high above most Rapids using evidence left behind by Paleo-Indians such as pottery shards found at Carpinteria Creek[9][10]. By 1840, farming had become an established industry here with cheese production being one mainstay[11][12], but overall transportation remained primarily via water ferries until well into the 20th century because land routes were too hazardous for wagon trains or carts even during dry times[13].
