Marie was also known for its lumber industry which contributed to its nickname "The Lumber Capital of the World." In recent years, Sault Ste. Sault Ste. Marie is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan, on the Sault River between Lake Huron and Superior National Forest. The population was 24,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from French: "sauter" (to jump) and "ste-Marie" (a bay). The area that now forms Sault Ste. Marie was first settled by early Native Americans, including the Potawatomi and Ojibwe groups. In 1784, fur trader Jacques Marquette explored the area and named it after his hometown of Quebec City, Canada: Sault-la-Roche or "Hooker's Fort". In 1814, United States troops burned down what is now downtown Sault Ste. Marie to prevent its cultivation as a settlement by American Fur traders interested in control of trade on Lake Huron's eastern shoreline.* In 1825, lumberman John Butterfield founded a sawmill here; he also built a gristmill and outbuildings for his mill on current site near First Street and Main Avenue. By 1848, butterfield had moved his mills to present day Mackinac County; however, because of competition from other business owners in nearby Detroit*, he did not build any new mills until 1870(*). During World War II* (1939-1945), military personnel barracks were constructed at various locations around town; these include USAREUR Camp Dechambeau on Great Lakes Drive north of First Street and Main Avenue (*), USAREUR Camp Beaulieu south of First Street east of Ionia Road (*), Canadian Forces Base North Battleford west across Snelling Road from Second Avenue *(!), later renamed Air Force Base Wayne to honor General Curtis LeMay [*], then active in Bomber Command(*). At one point over 50% of all employes at all local government agencies were military personnel!* During 1945-1950† [*], construction began on Northern Michigan University's main campus; this project resulted in an influx of students into town which led to increased retail businesses growth(*); today Northern Michigan University stands proud as one of America's leading university campuses – with more than 100 undergraduate degree options †*. * While much has changed since World War II ended – such as increased traffic due to recent development along Interstate 95 – many aspects about life in Sault Ste. Marie remain unchanged†† *.
The Sault Ste. Marie area was first settled by the Ojibwe in the early 1800s. The name “Sault” comes from a word meaning “shore” or “bank.” The town was founded on the southern bank of the Rouge River, which is now part of the city of Sault Ste. Marie. The first white man to set foot on the island was Pierre-Etienne Des Rosiers, who arrived in 1763 and named it after himself and his father, Jean-Baptiste DesRosiers. In 1812, Gen. John Custer's cavalry unit camped on the island and supplies were lost when their boat sank near shore; this caused an uproar among Native Americans because they thought that white men had stolen their food! The town began to grow rapidly after lumber companies started coming here for timber, and in 1851, it became a reality when a company called United States Express landed here with plans to build a railroad between Detroit and Toronto! By 1870, there were over 1,000 people living in Sault Ste. Marie! By 1900, however, only 60 people remained! In 1922, Sault Ste. Marie became part of Canada while its residents voted against joining Quebec due to cultural differences! The population grew slowly until 1959 when it reached 1009 people! In 1996-1997, Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Sault Ste.Marie; as a result, many businesses closed down as well as homes; however, some people decided to rebuild instead including the revival of local music scene started by local musician Gord Downey Jr.. In 2013-2014,, another major hurricane hit southeastern Michigan causing extensive damage including roofing failures at several buildings in downtown Sault Ste.Marie; as a result many businesses closed down again but this time with more anticipation as many believe that this will be the beginning ofthe end for downtown development in SaultSteMarie Today Downtown is still growing but there are some challenges like crime rates increasing which makes it difficult for businesses to stay open
