The Sault Ste. Marie Gun Grabs history can be traced back to the early 1800s when guns were still a common tool for men in the area. The first gungrab was documented on July 5, 1821 when French fur traders found and seized a musket from a local Indian tribe. The Musquash Band of Indians retaliated by seizing two handguns from two white settlers in 1824. The Second Opium War (1839-1842) led to an increase ingun grabs throughout the Western Canada region as warlords began to stockpile firearms in order to resist British forces. In 1840, one such individual, David Thompson, took possession of a shotgun from an Aboriginal man named John Aikin while working on the Canadian Pacific Railway. Gun grab activity also increased during the American Civil War (1861- 1865). American soldiers frequently stole firearms from Native Americans living near military encampments across Canada. As a result, gungrabbers became well known and feared among Canadian civilians and law enforcement officials. In 1867, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) began using dragnet raids to confiscate weapons from suspected gungrabbers along the border with United States of America (US). This tactic resulted in many firearm seizures that helped stamp out gungrabbing activity throughout Canada for good.
Sault Ste. Marie was founded in 1824 as a small, unimportant Indian village on the Mississippi River. The village became an important military post during the War of 1812 and then a center for fur trade. In 1834, Sault Ste. Marie was renamed after Heneagee Gabriel de la Motte-Aube, the first French governor of Michigan Territory. The city grew rapidly during the late 19th century and by World War I it had become one of the largest cities in North America. However, economic decline started to set in during the Great Depression and after World War IIs war efforts led to significant reductions in workforce opportunities and social services. By 1970, Sault Ste. Marie had lost its status as an important cultural and commercial centerand its population declined to around 20,000 people. However, recent revitalization has begun to reverse some of these trends and by 2007 it had regained its former stature as an economic center with a strong job market and growing cultural scene.

Sault Ste. Marie is a town located in Saginaw County, Michigan, United States. The population was 5,509 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Huron word "sault" meaning "a strong cliff or promontory." The first settler in what became Sault Ste. Marie was John Ross and his family who arrived on July 20, 1824. They named their land Fort Ross after Colonel George Ross of the U.S Army during the War of 1812. The town site was surveyed by Lieutenant General Lewis Cass in 1827 and named for Captain Samuel de la Salle (1685-1751), an officer in France during the Seven Years' War and then governor of Quebec City before being made a general in India under Governor James McGillivray (1756-1820). La Salle had been appointed to survey this area by Governor Mackenzie with instructions to lay out a road from Montreal to Detroit so that traders could reach inland Indian villages near Lake Superior instead of having to go downriver through difficult rapids. In 1829, Captain John Nesbit settled on the east bank of river mouth between present day Sault Ste. Marie and Gratiot Island, naming his land Nakina Point after his daughter Nakina (Nakina's Harbour). In 1851, Nicholas Doucette established a fur trade post at Skeena Point about two miles upstream from today's town site on what is now Lapeer Street. From this post he sold furs to native tribes along the lower Great Lakes until 1794 when French traders abandoned it due to American exploration and settlement of these areas followed by British traders in 1795 numbering more than 2,500 settlers who founded small towns along lakes Huron and Ontario but none as large as Sault Ste. The Sault Ste. Marie area was originally inhabited by the Algonquian-speaking Potawatomi people. The first European to visit the area was Giovanni da Verrazzano, a Italian explorer, on October 14, 1534. He named the area "Innisfree" after his ship, the Expedice, which reached Lake Huron from Canada that day. The first permanent settlement in what is now the Sault Ste. Marie Area was made by French fur traders in 1791. The region became part of Canada following the 1867 US-Canada Treaty and became part of Ontario after it was created as a province in 1898. In 1912, Canadian Prime Minister Sir John A Macdonald announced that all land east of James Bay would be annexed to Ontario as part of a proposed new province called Manitoba. This included most of what is now Michigan and Minnesota. As a result of this annexation, much Native American land located in the Sault Ste. Marie Area were lost forever to development and are today known as ceded territory or reservations within both Ontario and Manitoba
