Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan is a town in the U.S. state of Michigan and is the largest city in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The population was 477 at the 2010 census and 523 at the 2016 census. It lies on the Sault River, between Marquette and Huron counties, outside of Detroit metropolitan area. The first shot from a cannonship fired in what is now Sault Ste. Marie took place on August 12, 1805 when Lieutenant John Dickey of HMS " Sovereign ", launched from Fort Dearborn, opened fire upon a group of Indians camps located on Grand Traverse Bay near modern-day Sault Ste Marie Township. This early skirmish became known as "the Battle of Gratiot". In 1837, with British forces occupying Canada's Canadian provinces after their victory over France in the Napoleonic Wars, fur trader George Meech founded what would become known as Meech’s Landing on the mouth of Muskegon Creek west of Sault Ste Marie. renamed Harbor Springs by him in honor his late father General George Armstrong Mackenzie’s successful campaign to invade Lake Superior during that year’s Toronto Rush (1837). There were several other landing points along this creek before Meech’s but it was here that he built his first cabin and began trading goods with local Indians for beads, furs and maize (corn). The following year saw Mackenzie reach Gratiot Point where he anchored his ship for supplies then continued upriver to establish Fort Mackenzie later calledafter him Winnipeg (now Winnipeg Manitoba) after becoming its first captain under Hudson Bay Company regulations
