The current mayor is John Jameson and the City Council is made up of 11 members who are elected at-large to serve three year terms with no term limit. The first permanent settlers in what is now Saginaw Township were a band of Ottawa Indians led by Chief Joseph Lacrosse and his brother Sacagawea from their village of L'Anse aux Meadows on Ingham Bayou about 6 miles (10 km) east of modern-day Saginaw on today's authority land known as "Mt. Pleasant." They built a small log cabin on a bluff overlooking the river in 1796 or 1797 and named it Fort Dearborn because they had been deposited there by British forces during their occupation of Canada following independence from Britain. In 1814, federal troops burned down Fort Dearborn as part of an effort to remove all Indian settlements within 5 miles (8 km) of Detroit while still under American control. This action caused great concern among Native Americans who alleged that white men were trying to take away their way of life and kill their chiefs and people. The town was founded as a result of this incident when Genesee Township formed from parts of Washtenaw and Oakland Counties around 1815 according to charter granted by Gov.-Genl James Kappler upon his appointment as Territorial Governor over all Lower Michigan lands westwardly lying between Lake Huron and beyond said limits... The Town plat was filed with Michicourt Recorder Sept 9th 1816... The first school for white children in what is now Saginaw Township was opened in1814 by Revd Dr Samuel Morse…It served students until 1830 when it burned down…A new school building was erected next door using funds raised through subscription from local farmers…. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln presented then President Andrew Jackson with a gift certificate for $5 worthof goods including clothing “the best kind which can be procured” from Saginaw merchants for use by United States soldiers during the Mexican–American War; this event helped convince Jackson to approve General Winfield Scott’s invasion plan that year…At 4:00 pm September 10th 1840 Indian Chief Tecumseh came into town accompanied by several hundred warriors seeking revenge against whites after being scalpred near Marquette.. After learning that no one was home he took off wearing only his breeches leaving behind evidence that he had visited our townromptu…. On October 3rd 1840 Black Hawk arrived at Wexford Landing area opposite present day City Limits just past present day First Street corner where Main Street meets US Highway 12L & State Route 131E…..Black Hawk became known locally as 'Saginaw Man'due to this event…..During Black Hawk's visit some stores along US 12L & 131E were looted & destroyed…………..In 1851 David Livingstone journeyed through Upper Peninsula country via Ionia Pass coming across open graves inhabitants claimed were those killed by White Men while hunting black bear……Contrary to popular belief most skeletons found herein never bore any resemblance whatsoever to those associated with Massacre Of Ft Knox……Today evidentially marked sites where such killing occurred include locations just south side First Street Corner – just before present day Mound Rd intersection – directly across street EAST OF FIRST STREET CORNER - PLACEMENT WHERE BLACK HAWK BECAME KNOWN AS SBingenewswoman Afraidaksoa located…..Nearby also open field used for Bears Den location………………Although many residents continue to maintain these claims there has been NO recent discovery Of bones bearing any resemblance To That Incident….Today much controversy surrounds purported massacre locations but few definitive proof remains………….........

The following year, Jackson defeated Napoleon Bonaparte at Battle of Yorktown and as a result became America's first president.
