Saginaw is a city located in the lower Peninsula of Michigan, United States. The population was 3,627 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Saginaw County. The area now known as Saginaw was first populated by Algonquian-speaking Native Americans who called it Wauseon Township. In 1807, US Indian Agent James Wilkinson named the town after his native place, Sagonawa Creek in present-day Ontario County, Canada. After the Mexican–American War (1846-1848), Mexico ceded control of California to US President James K. Polk in 1848 and renamed all former Mexican lands Texas; this left Texas and California both nominally under US jurisdiction but with little practical connection between them. In 1854, Saginaw became part of Michigan Territory when that territory was founded from parts of Upper Canada and Ontario County. As part of this process, territorial governments were created including a board of commissioners which included representatives from Detroit, Mackinac City and other settlements east of the river Rouge on Lake Huron. On January 1, 1861, when complete statehood for Michigan was granted to US president Abraham Lincoln via a act passed by Congress on December 4th ( concurrent with his inauguration as US president), Saginaw became part of what would become Washtenaw County in southeastern Michigan; until then it had been unincorporated land west of the Rouge River including what is today downtown Saginaw The city's location made it an important transportation hub during its early years – goods moved through here include cotton ginners' flour and meal products exported to slavery markets around the southern United States, lumber brought downriver for sawmills near Grand Rapids and shipped north into Chicago or points east before being resold to farmers in central Michigan However, while much industrial growth took place throughout late 19th century North America due largely to new technologies such as cars and radios – within reach for everyone living within commuting distance – downtowns like Detroit experienced rapid decline characterized by mass demolition beginning in earnest during World War II which destroyed most job opportunities for locals while creating massive housing projects away from any residential areas leaving behind blighted neighborhoods today It wasn’t until after Barack Obama began his first term as President in 2009 that some sign started appearing “of lifeReturning Downtown” although there has been no major redevelopment since then As one side effect following industry collapse have been large numbers homeless people occupying vacant properties across town overnight sleeping or engaging in begging or window prostitution
On July 16, 1807, Saginaw was founded by the French as a fur trade post on the Maumee River. The town grew rapidly and by 1827 it had become a major commercial center with its own flour mill, sawmill, and grist mill. In 1834, Saginaw became the first city in Michigan to be chartered by the state legislature. It was named for General John Saginaw who had led an expedition against the Chippewa Indians in 1803. In 1863, when Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States, he made Saginaw his headquarters during his campaign trail through Michigan. In 1865, after Ulysses S. Grant's victory in the American Civil War, Saginaw became part of new Michigan Territory and served as its capital until 1870 when Lansing took over that role. Saginaw experienced several economic downturns during the 19th century but managed to rebound thanks to successive waves of immigration from Europe and Asia which created new jobs and pushed prices down for local goods. During World War II there were large-scale steel production operations at nearby Freeport Arsenal which resulted in increased traffic on Main Street and other aspects of town life changed dramatically; however no damage or loss occurred as a result of those activities
