Saginaw, Michigan is a city in Midwestern United States. The population was 34,691 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in Bay County and the second-largest city on the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Saginaw is also one of the most populous cities in North America, with an estimated population of 653,671 as of 2016. The first European settlers in what became Saginaw were French traders who traveled to this area around 1795 during the French–American War. They named their settlement "Quebec." When U.S. troops captured Canada during that war, they renamed it "Sag Harbor" after General John Burgoyne's headquarters at Saratoga Springs in New York City. In 1814, when Michigan became a territory of the United States following its purchase from Britain, Saginaw was part of Kalamazoo County and its seat was at Grand Rapids. When American President James K. Polk toured southwestern Michigan in 1846 he visited Saginaw and liked what he saw so much that he ordered General George Akeley to establish a military post here for US forces stationed along the Great Lakes region during WWI as part of his preparations for open warfare against Germany and Austria-Hungary; Akeley did so between 1915 and 1917 under then-Army Chiefof Staff Omar Bradley's supervision at nearby Isabella Barracks (now Ypsilanti High School). After World War I ended hostilities in Europe, Akeley moved his command post from Isabella Barracks to downtown Saginaw on October 14, 1919 where it remained until September 30th 1945 when it was transferred back to Isabella Barracks after V-E Day celebrations by then Commanding General Curtis LeMay Jr.. The last US military installation within reach of downtown Saginaw before its transferprise was Fort Wayne Army National Guard Camp located across Mackinac Bridge just east of Downtown on M-2 highway near now known as Eastern Market Place (formerly called State Street) which opened June 12th 1946 while Akeley's old Command Post still stood vacant inside current day Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital building on Railroad Avenue near present day Woodward Avenue which closed May 15th 2001 due to demolition being conducted for new development adjacent to old hospital site by then Community Development Agency - now government owned land leased back by DTE Energy Company which occupies former hospital site today...Today only 1 building remnant remain from original 3 buildings erected circa 1920s/30s remnants remaining are 2 story 1 story brick structure formerly attached qvc girders strongly built front facing rear wall has large opening defining full width entrance hall side walls are finely finished masonry entablature with large early 20th century cast iron grille above door topped off by smallantomical 19th century dentiform capable keystone adorned with elaborate late Victorian period finial flanked by two large set stone wheel chimes each weighing approximately 2 pounds each remains an important reminder of former presence in downtown area...The history and architecture associated with Saginaws vibrant community come alive every time someone visits or takes a walk through its Historic District!

Saginaw is a city in the U.S. state of Michigan and the county seat of Saginaw County. The population was 2,595 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous municipality in Michigan after Detroit, and is one of the five cities in the area that make up Metro Detroit. The first permanent settler in what would become Saginaw was John Beall on July 6, 1807 when he founded a trading post near modern-day Midland Avenue and Saginaw River. He named his land "Beall's Landing" after himself and his brother James Beall (1784–1859). On September 17, 1809, Beall sold 1,000 acres (400 hectares) along present-day Midland Avenue to David Goodrich for $100 US$. There were no resident Native American families living in or around Saginaw until about 1800 according to local historian Archibald Buttram. In 1837, George Stephenson built a locomotive depot at Depot Road on the east side of town –later renamed "Broadview". This served as an important landmark for rail transportation throughout much of Saginaw County until it burned down in 1865 while being used by freight cars transporting sand from nearby Manton Township to be used as building materials for new homes west of Midland Ave., creating an interest in rebuilding it; however no such project ever took place. On October 10, 1938, during World War II residents organized themselves into groups known as " locals against war" to oppose military recruitment drives by Defense Department officials located adjacent to their neighborhoods without Warning signs or any other form of notification from officials beforehand (this type of activity was called " unlawful assembly"). The efforts failed but lead to increased awareness among citizens about possible dangers associated with military service and led eventually to bans on similar recruiting activities throughout most portions of Michigan not just within Saginaw County; this event has been referred to as "the Battle at Broadview." 1
The first Europeans to visit Saginaw were French traders who passed through the area in 1699. In 1701, a group of British colonists arrived and began trading with the native people. The town was founded on the banks of the Saginaw River in 1702 by Captain John Stennis and his assistant, John Purdy. The first school opened in 1707 and was run by teacher Samuel Wilkinson.The town became an important trade center for goods brought down the river from Lake Superior. The first store was built in 1813 by William Hutterer. In 1818, a sawmill was built and quickly became one of the leading businesses in Saginaw. By 1830, lumber had become the major industry in Saginaw after being developed by Henry Dearborn and others. In 1831, Detroit was incorporated as a city and it soon became an important center for commerce and industry.In 1836, Augustus Woodward founded Woodward & Company followed by other businesses that helped contribute to what is now Michigan’s largest economy.During World War II, Saginaw played an important role as a munitions plant due to its location at I-75/57 interchange
