In 2004, then-Mayor Jerry Ford dedicated Woodward Park on Midtown Avenue near downtown to commemorate Woodward Avenue being named an international symbol for business opportunity due to its variety of restaurants, nightlife venues and other businesses moving into or expanding along it since its designation by Ford as a commercial corridor which would promote job growth throughout metro Detroit area (particularly within Ann Arbor). It also served as an inspiration for Mayor Mike Duggan's plan for redevelopment along Woodward from Midtown northward into Downtown Detroit with mixed use zoning that would include hotel/motel developments; office buildings; retail stores; public square space;event spaces such as music festivals or soccer games;and neighborhoods around each core sector center courthouse/police station complex including Eastern Market quarter mile south of downtown where light industrial redevelopments are proposed including a auto dealership/motorcycle dealership

The town became an incorporated municipality on January 1, 1903. On November 3, 1907, a tornado struck the city of Saginaw killing thirteen people and injuring ninety-six others. From 1970 to 1980, Saginaw was home to the world's largest steel plant at Sparrow Point Shipbuilding & Drydock Company Incorporated (SPDC). After being closed down due to bankruptcy in 1982, Sparrow Point reopened as an educational center in 1984 before closing again in 1990. The site is currently occupied by a mixed-use development called "Sparrow Point Village."

It started as a small trading post on the Rouge River and grew rapidly due to its location at the mouth of the Saginaw River. In 1849, it became the first incorporated municipality in Michigan.
