The first public display of gun lights occurred on November 15, 1868 when American Revolutionary War veteran John Prentice exhibited his lighted pistols at the Saginaw Fairgrounds. Gun lights became widely used during the Civil War, and were frequently seen at military events. After the war, gun lights became popular among law enforcement officers as well as civilians. In 1924, Saginaw began hosting its own annual fair that featured a variety of exhibitions and demonstrations. At this event, gun lights were again displayed to great effect by various exhibitors. In 1937, Saginaw installed its first electric streetlamp at the corner of Main and Shields Streets. This lamp was an important step in increasing safety for pedestrians on busy streets downtown. By 1942, all city government buildings had been illuminated with electric streetlights. The first settlers to Saginaw were Englishmen who arrived in 1835 as part of the McNamara Expedition and named their new town for General James K. McNamara, president of the United States during World War II and head of military intelligence under President Franklin D. Roosevelt. At that time, Saginaw was just outside of Detroit on Michigans primary waterway, Huron River. In 1837, John Broughton founded a trading post called Fort Stedman on land he had purchased from an Ottawa chief named Pontiac near what is now Midland Park Township in Oakland County; this post served as a base from which traders and missionaries conducted missionary work among Native Americans along both sides of the river. In 1862, Saginaw was made a Territorial District within Wayne County; it remained an operational county seat until 1907 when it merged with Oakland County to form Wayne County proper; however, Saginaw continued to be its official county seat until 1938 when it became part of Oakland City effective incorporation date (July 1). The first mayoralty for Saginaw occurred on November 5th 1882 when George Hickenlooper was elected to succeed William Newton as Mayor following Newton's retirement due to ill health He served one term(1882-1885) before being succeeded by his brother Hiram Hickenlooper who served two terms (1886-1892). On May 15th 1893 then newly created Borough Councilmember Augustus Pemberton proposed that money be set aside for paving Main Street between Mackinac Avenue and US 12 so that traffic could flow more easily through town center during heavy holiday traffic periods which led to passage and approval by Borough Councilmember Pemberton of $5 per day for all road improvements authorized without prior vote or notification to residents This ordinance paved Main Street between Mackinac Avenue and US 12 becoming known as "Pembertons Streets". On October 3rd 1896 Charles Leland installed electric lights at night along Main Street starting at Mackinac Avenue . This event marked end of electric streetlights in Saginaw
Saginaw was founded in 1824 as a small town on the east side of the Mackinac Bridge. The town grown rapidly during the early 1800s, and by 1827 it had become a major fur-trading center. In 1826, Saginaw became the first city in Michigan. The city experienced rapid growth during its 19th century heyday, and by 1870 it had more than 12,000 residents. However, during the Progressive Era (1912-1920) Saginaw's economy slumped and it lost its status as a leading city. In 1975, Saginaw was renamed part of Detroit after its mayor agreed to merge his city with Detroit.
